St John's Wort?

Does anyone know if St John's Wort is effective, or if there are any other alternatives to anti-depressants I can try?

I have heard good things about it - but watch out if you take the pill as it can make it stop working. And if you're taking any other medication, check out whether there are any clashes.

I'm not taking the pill, I'm on thyroxine for underactive thyroid but not taking any other meds at the moment.

I was on Citalopram but have come off it now.

Hiya wwb - I bought some st johns wort because I am very anti -antidepressants! I found it worked wonders and really picked me up an awful lot. I had to take 3 tablets a day and a couple of times that i forgot them i found myself in a bad modd that went when i took them again but when i came off them altogether I stayed positive and I haven't been depressed for months after

Sounds very positive, swiper. I'm not anti-ads, but having come off them I've realised just how numb they've made me. At least now I'm able to "feel", so I don't want to change to the other ads that were prescribed - but I still need a bit of help.

I got mine from Holland and Barrett - I think they're still doing their big sales so they are something like 9.00 reduced to 2.00 - bargain!!!

I think they are definately worth a try. Fantastic that you got off the ad's

Well, I've got some and taken my first one today ... fingers crossed!

Annoyingly, Holland and Barrett's range are all made with gelatine. I asked if they had any suitable for vegetarians, and the assistant asked me what the problem was, as there was no meat in St John's Wort! The gelatine-free ones cost me a bomb, but if they work then it's a price worth paying.

I'll swear by them too but it took about 3 weeks for me to get the complete effects from them so hang in there if they dont seem to work at first

it is meant to be easier for body to absorb (and no gelatine ) there is a make you can buy at most independant health food stores but i cant remember name-its in a white box with aphoto of the herb on the front and green lines around top and bottom of box
i think it does work with a subtle effect (its not like taking mind blowing anti ds )but its much better.you maybe have to take it for 3 months to see the best effects-in other parts of europe docs can perscribe it

Oh, I saw some tincture in H&B, I wasn't sure whether it would have the same effect so didn't get it. I hadn't realised that it was easier to absorb that way.

all of the capsules on this site appear to be gelatine free too worth bearing in mind for next time bet its cheaper than holland and barrat to(i dont like h and b- staff usually are not very knowledgable- prices too high and they dont have the best products on the market )

WWB - When I had PND my GP recommended the homeopathic remedy "Sepia". It really worked for me. ... In fact.... I must get some more!!!!

Wow, a GP who is prepared to look "outside the box", as my dh puts it!

I haven't come across that one ... I presume that you needed to see a homoeopath to get the doses right, or can you just buy it OTC?

It's over the counter. You can buy it in boots in 6cc or 30cc doses.

there is evidence to the mild depression can be to do with lack of certain minerals in diet (i forget which) so a nutritional suppliment is a good idea to keep you on top i ran out of maximol a coouple of weeks ago and i feel s**t really need some the raspberry one is delish i crave it -im going to order some today
