Is citalopram safe?

Hi there,

Am new to all this but wondered if someone could give me some advice please.
DDs are 4 and 9 months and have just been prescribed citalopram for anxiety and some obsessive thinking. Not depressed but the anxiety makes me a bit down. Been prescribed 10mg a day as didn't really want to have to take ADs. Will they make me more anxious or depressed than I am now, also the wee booklet said it could give me suicidal notions??!

Thanks

Hello

I am taking citalopram and have been for the past couple of months. I found I had some side affects at first, but these were mainly nausea, and cleared up within a couple of weeks.

Most people get some side affects I think, but very few people become much more anxious or get suicidal notions.

There is a citalopram buddy thread here if you'd like to join .

Hi, sorry to hear that you have experiencing anxiety. I am a CPN (on maternity leave at mo) but have in the past experienced depression and anxiety myself.

If I was depressed again I personally would take Citalopram. The booklet will list most side effects that people have experienced. However ime most people may get a bit of nausea for a few days and generally then get on ok. Obviously there are exceptions to this. You may find that the dose needs to be increased to 20mg as 10mg may not be a therapeutic dose for you.

The tablets will not start to work for at least 7-10 days (more likely to be 2-3 weeks). Your GP should arrange to see you again definitely within 28 days to see how you are getting on. Have you been offered any other treatment - "talking therapy" type of support I mean? (varies massively from area to area what is available)

Hello,

I was on citalopram for about 9 months, came off them when I found out I was pregnant. I did experience some nausea but it didn't last long and that was really the only side effect. I did feel that they helped but it was easy to come off them as well.
