Treatments other than AD's and St Johns Wort?

I suffer from bouts of depression and in the past have taken Ad's and St John's wort. I am feeling low again and am in need of a temporary tonic - I just don't want to get into taking tablets again. The last time I was on AD's I had a tough time coming off them (dothiepin). And awful side-effects with other (starting with c and ending in pram?). Can anyone recommend anything, maybe a herbal tonic, that will give a little lift for a few days until the mood passes. Then if it doesn't, I know I really will have to get back on those damn tabs!

Citralopram (sp?) I was on them for years and they did wonders for me so its a shame they cause you side effects.

Silly question but is there anything that is primarly causing you stress or is it everything?

Are you trying to cope with too much? Do have support? Do you have time for yourself to do what you want whether its having a long hot bath or going out with your mates?

Mind have a leaflet on controlling depression by diet.......oily fish was featured prominently, and lots of fruit and veg IIRC

Thanks donk and msbionic, yes that's the name of them! I do get time to myself - I have got a lot on my plate, but it isn't getting on top of me. The black cloud just seems to appear over me for no particular reason - this time last week I felt fine! That's really why I don't want to go back on the tabs, because next week I might be fine - I just don't want to get into that cycle again.

Hi Krib, really sorry to hear you're feeling like this.
I go through something similar but have never taken tablets (not that I feel there's anything wrong in that) as I found I could control it with reflexology sessions. A friend of mine has great success with acupuncture also.
Either of those certainly won't harm you if you visit a trained professional and I can't recommend reflexology enough as it makes all the difference to me now.

Maybe you need to watch what your eating/doing for a while to see if there's a pattern.

Or has it something to do with the change in the weather because I know its affected me (im not on AD's anymore BTW).

The trouble is it can become a vicious circle because you're thinking about the effects.

I have found that magnesium and vit b6 helped me.
