Leaving teaching

Have come back to teaching after maternity leave, a psychotic episode and a depressive spell and I really hate it. Been back since sept so have given it a fair go. Too much pressure I'm afraid, threat of being put onto capability measures. Am going to concentrate on my daughter. Is there life after teaching? Any jobs I could do?

I am in a similar situation! I HATE teaching, we have very difficult students behaviour wise! I just feel that I am being made little of every day I go in. Today I nearly got knocked over by a couple of students in the corridor, yesterday some students threw a ball across the classroom. I have no interest. I would much rather be a stay at home mum but unfortunately I have to keep working. For the ast two years I have been on and off anti depressants and believe that it has a lot to do with my hatred of my job! I feel like I am just getting through the week and live for the weekend and holidays! So you are not alone! Regarding other jobs....I don't know and I'm trying to figure this out myself! Best of luck!

I left teaching in 2001 after depression and have on and off done supply- if you get a regualr few schools it is lovely. last year i did part time but unfortunately it has caused my depression to come back- i work too hard, burn out and make myself ill. I am looking now for ata type work- i thrive in school environment but personally think that schools and monitoring and performing are no good for a workaholic depressive.

so sorry to hear of your horrid time. is less than a term long enough to really be sure? just wondering. what about supply/part time/different age group? or tutoring? I do quite a lot of this and love it.

what age group are you currently?

I left teaching a few years ago now and have never looked back. I posted some pros and cons not long ago, so do feel free to search.

Unfortunately I think that you do need to be very mentally and physically robust to teach nowadays, there is just no leeway or allowances for periods of poorer health or performance.

It is definitely something to seriously consider - you may find your health significantly improves once you are no longer teaching.
