Has anyone taken amitriptyline for postnatal depression and had problems coming off it?

My DH took it for depression, and it was evil! He did nothing but sleep and felt like s**t while on it, so stopped taking it and he was back to his old self in days..... i think it depends how long you have been taking it to be honest.

I've been taking it for two years for postnatal depression as it was the only anti-depressant that didn't pass through into breast milk. Started on 150mgs at night and could have slept for England but have been reducing the dose for the last 6 months down to one every other night, but when I go without for a few nights I find I wake up with a blinding headache. To start with I thought it was something to do with my eyesight (needing new glasses) as paracetamol, aspirin and ibuprofen didn't touch it, but as soon as I took another tablet it went away!
Just wondered if anyone had experienced similar problems. I don't want to have to take this thing for the rest of my life!

i have been taking amitriptyline since i was 15, and iam 30 now. i know i'll be on it for the rest of my life. i lowered it from 200mg, to now, only 75mg. i did that for my pregnancy, and have stuck with it. i take it at bedtime, cause it really knocks you out. good luck to you quitting, i know iam not that strong. i got super sick one time when i tried cold turkey, so please do it VERY gradually. good luck.

I took it for a year and couldn't deal with the dry mouth/dizziness so swapped for Prozac (was for clinical rather than PND though). I found Prozac pretty easy to wean myself off gradually and was drug-free within another year.

I've just come off 10mg amitriptyline which was for tension headaches not depression and felt really weird on it. I was very naughty though and just stopped taking it after a week but it was a low dosage.

Have you started it yet jac? It will affect different people different ways and once it kicks in you'll feel much better I bet.

i took amitriptylne, for tension headaches, and migranes from an accident, as well, but weaning off is VERY hard to do. i get real sick when i try, so i just accept it.

about the comment about someone's baby being ok, cause they didn't take it. i have 3 children, and i had to take it with all 3, and there is NOTHING wrong with my children. the risk is soooooooooooooooooooo small, and anxiety and feeling like hell, is far worse on the baby, and if you do your research you'd see, that they do not feel tricylics present any danger to fetuses any longer. nothing was ever proven enough to make fact. i got a new baby and she is perfect.
