Fasting / 5:2 diet

Grrr - one piggy week as I ruined it

So did 5/2 for five weeks. Lost half a stone. People were commenting - thinner face, smaller belly. I fitted into a skirt that last fit me over five years ago.

Went on seaside holiday for a week. Ate ice cream and doughnuts and cake and fish and chips and drank wine and beer and came back to have put on half of what I had lost. So annoyed.

So did a fast day today. Quarter of my tdee is 600 cal but ended up having 700 cal. Going to fast Mon/Thurs/Sat next week to try to get back on track but am so cross with myself.

Also go away again at end of aug. another seaside holiday this time with family. How do I stop it happening again?

You sure this 'fasting' thing is any good? Not seeing too many inspiring posts about it

Think long term.

Sadly I can't credit who it was said this, but it made perfect sense to me as a sum up of 5:2 over a year:

24 weeks of great fasts
24 weeks of iffy fasts
4 weeks if sod-it!

Now, isn't that a nice sustainable doable approach?

Stop beating yourself up, do some excellent fasts before your next holiday and then enjoy it.

Really, soul sister? Not sure where you're looking.

Yes, it's not for everyone. And those most likely to post are those struggling or needing help. There's an awful lot of us who are doin it, having good results, but not necessarily posting about them.

I like that approach MelanieCheeks. Do you think it works for weight loss?

Yes I see people posting about weight losses

But them posts like this too, or where they can't stick to 500 cal or have no energy to exercise

Very Confused about it

IME, and I'm a long-time IFer, after you've been fasting for a while and you suddenly put weight on - for whatever reason - the weight comes off just as quick as you put it on.

Provided you get quickly back into the swing of things.

I've put 5lbs on over a long weekend - and by the following Wednesday, it's all gone again.

MC I think that was Tip said that. Smile

Get yourselves over to the main thread - but before you do, check out Melanie's lovely pic in her new dress!

Nice one, Melanie!

Shucks, TA B&W!

Yeah, this works. For most people. But not all. And the lack of energy or difficulty in sticking to 500 caks tend to be Initial learning curve issues.

It works for me so not really engaging in that angle of the thread.

Thanks MelanieCheeks. I find the main thread too hard to keep up with!

Clearly it's not working for you tho! Oh well... Good luck

Yes, I agree with Breadandwine - it's normal to put weight on during a holiday (and 3.5 lbs is normal) but you have to discipline yourself to get back to fasting asap on return. No need to do three fast days - just resume 5:2 on 500 cals again. Don't be cross with yourself - or at least transform that crossness into positive action :)

You have done really well so far and it was just a blip. Don't beat yourself up but use it as a learning experience. Next hols treat yourself but work it out that you still come within your TDEE maybe?

T'was indeed me who said
24 good
24 pretty good
4 party on
as otherwise what is the point in living

Order
Last year I lost a stone between September and December
I then went to the USA for Christmas
and came home 8 lb heavier
but STRICTLY fasted in January - did not give my body time to turn that undigested food and fluid into fat cells
and was back at target weight by the end of January

rapid weight gain is not fat, it undigested food and fluid
and with a bit of discipline it is gone almost as quick

remember that NOBODY has a static weight, not the film stars or models or any of them
they ALL fluctuate up and down 3-4 lb around their ideal
watch all the beach pictures in the week before the Oscars as they starve (fast) themselves into those dresses and suits
then look at the menu on the night that gets hoovered up because the cameras are turned off

we are A listers Grin

Order, I had an indulgent week off recently, and put on 5lb...and then lost 4 of them in two fasts over four days. Weight put on like you describe is almost certainly largely water/salt/etc and will come off MUCH faster. Honestly!

Thank you. I an only weighing myself on the scales at my parents' house (about once a fortnight) so I don't obsess and do it every day or even twice a day, so will have to wait and see. Lost my fasting mojo a bit though and did it on Sat and Tues but only managed about 750 cals so not really a fast at all. Toddler and baby are being difficult at moment which isn't helping.

hogwash
anything that is significantly under 1/2 your TDEE with long gaps between eating is a fast
and as you get used to it the long ones become easier

Same happened to me, I went for a weekend away and meant to fast on the Monday when we were returning. We went to the beach in the morning and I ended up eating a picnic with everyone. Since then I've completely lost the mind set and feel horrible. It's been 3 weeks and there have been leaving dos and parties and picnics and I just want to eat all the time. Humph

restart with a mini fast : a couple of days of 16:8 - ie skipping breakfast
then do a 1000 calorie day
then a 750
then the whole hog with a 500
if nothing else, little targets are easier to achieve and then you get the buzz of success

Report
orderinformation · 31/07/2013 23:03

Can you explain 16:8 to me please

OP posts:
Report
BsshBossh · 31/07/2013 23:08

16:8 - 16 hours fasting, eating only in an 8 hour window eg 12-8pm or 10am-6pm. You generally eat less because most people find it difficult to eat all their TDEE in that time.

Less time for snackng too :)

And do you do that every day or instead of fasts or on non fast days?

I have skipped breakfast for years
(except that today was scrambled egg on brioche with OJ in the garden with DH)
so effectively 16:8 Monday to Friday

Report
BsshBossh · 01/08/2013 10:05

When I was maintaining I did 16:8 & no snacking Monday through Friday, very rarely doing 24 hour fasts. Now I'm back in weightloss mode I do 2x24 hour fasts and always skip breakfast except weekends (when I have brunch).
