Fasting / 5:2 diet

First day fasting for 5:2 - where right and wrong?

So decided yesterday to do 5:2. This is what I ate. Any thoughts/advice? Was too hungry not to eat throughout the day. For background have bmi 41 (obese, look smaller than I am though and take size 18/20 as long as not a pencil skirt). Have toddler and baby and baby does one bf a day but is weaning and mostly bottle fed.

Breakfast at 8.30am boiled egg and black tea

Snack 9.30am apple (didn't realise how high calorie this was. Will not do again)

Snack 11am banana

1.30 two rice cakes, 4 carrot batons, pot of jelly

3pm black coffee one sugar (don't like coffee without sugar, may have to switch to tea in day)

5pm while dd had her dinner - handful of carrot batons and about 100g vanilla yoghurt (probably should have foregone the yoghurt)

8pm stir fry cabbage, leek, 100g peppers, handful carrot batons, 100g roast chicken shredded - a spray of oil and lots of soy sauce.

So over the 500 cals but only just and is first day

Well done on your first day. Smile

I'm a newbie but hopefully my advice is valid. Your breakfast was perfect so well done. Apples are only about 53 calories - was that too much? Bananas and rice cakes are really high carb and will make you hungrier quicker. Swap the bananas for berry fruits and rice cakes for oat cakes and really light cream cheese and no jelly (the sweetness will make you want to eat more). Same with vanilla yogurt - go for 0% Greek style yogurt and add your own fruit. And dinner sounds perfect.

Maybe try herbal tea? Also, did you drink lots of water? Sometimes, I think if you shake me, I sound like a bottle of water being shaken. Grin

Thanks Sotired. Sounds good except I don't like cheese. Drank so much water I needed the loo all the time!

It sounds like a good menu. I do agree though, I'm a newbie too but I found my first fast day hardest when I ate fruit- I was hungrier 30 mins later. I've found a menu that is manageable for me on my fast days, and so I will keep that up until I get bored with it! A lot of it is trial and error as to what works for you.
Well done!

Oh and peppermint tea in the evenings has helped those evening munchies! I also have a small glass of Pepsi max in the afternoon on a fast day, I know diet fizzy drinks are not great but I rarely have them the rest of the time and it does help me get through a fast day so I allow myself :)

It doesn't have to be cheese and/or oatcakes! How about a huge salad? With 50g tuna? (Adds about 58 calories to the salad). Basically, whatever works for you.

Advice from an oldie. Firstly try and cut out the fruit, it spikes your insulin an just makes you hungrier. Secondly try and stretch out the periods when you are not eating. If you must have breakfast then wait as long as you possibly can before eating it. Have a cup of mint tea then wait at least half an hour before eating. Get busy. It is much easier to fast if you are not busy.

Well done for getting started.

and from an even older oldie
try to go for periods without food but with lots of fluid (I mainline tea on fast days)
