I had it fitted just last week and apart from the initial cramping for the first couple of days... things have settled down.
But ... a couple of questions... will i still get my first period or is it common to start missing them straight away... ( I am due to come on today)
Also... Im paranoid about it falling out...is this possible and i mightnt have even noticed?!
What if the doc fitted me with a duff one... like one that someone forgot to put the hormone thingy on....???!!
And finally.... is it going to hurt to have sex... can it be poked around etc....??!!
I shouldve asked the doctor on the day but i felt so sick I just wanted to get out of there!
Thank you in advance people!

Don't know about missing periods as I had mine for ages, although they were much lighter.

They can fall out, yes. Make sure you attend you follow up appointment and if you are worried, you could always check your strings are there every so often.

Never felt it during sex and neither has my DH.

I had one for 7 years and after the spotting/bleeding in the first year stopped I didn't have any periods at all. I have heard of them falling out but think it's pretty rare. My DH could sometimes feel the string when DTD but it was worth it for such reliable contraception!

My periods stopped instantly, but my dh could feel the strings at times.(depends on time of month, asto how low they are.)

Jinx - I had my first coil fitted last week too. I found the experience really quite awful, and I was the same...just wanted to get the heck outta there asap! However I did take the info leaflet home.

It can fall out, and possibly without you noticing - but apparently its very rare, and would more than likely occur in the first 6 weeks. And the most likely way you might not notice it fall out is if it was to be 'disguised' within a particularly heavy bleed.

Regarding periods, I was told I would more than likely still have them over the next 3-6 months, but that they would start to become lighter and lighter and possibly stop altogether, and that spotting could happen at ANY point during the next 6 months. But was advised all women are different and to keep track of it.
I was given a chart to track my bleeds, how heavy the flow is, whether I have cramps and even how I feel emotionally to track mood swings etc.

Not sure about a 'duff one' but I'm sure they are stringently produced and tested in a clinical lab environment. I think a situation like that would be very rare. I think that's a question for the doctor! I might ask that one myself at my check up! :-)

I too was nervous to have sex after the fitting, it took me a full week to give it a go! But I can honestly say that neither my partner nor I felt anything different.

Hi, I had one bleed since my coil 2 years ago, I cannot feel my strings myself at all but the nurse said not to worry about that! Think my strings are quite short, the fitting of my coil was horrific it took 40 mins and a lot of bleeding and pain! Apparently I have a tight cervix only had 2 c-sections no vaginal births. Really dreading it needing renewing! I do love the convenience and no bleeding but really not sure if I could do if again, also ended up with an infection post insertion.

Oh no - I've just read your posts. I went to have mine fitted yesterday but the GP couldn't do it - and I've read some fairly negative old threads on here about the mirena just now. Have I had a lucky escape?

I didn't have a period for the years I had mine fitted.

DH could feel it in certain positions. (The few times we did it as it destroyed my libido to the extent that DH thinks I am positively rampant now I have hard it removed).

No, I don't think it could have fallen out.

I had one for 15 months. My periods slowly reduced - I was still getting a vague trace of blood every month, but that was it.

You can check the strings are in place, yourself, every month after your period, if you are concerned it may come out. They are not that tiny, unless the nurse chopped them really short.
