How effective is the morning after pill?

So...the condom came off completely, we both didn't realise until after. A few hours later we went and got the MAP, we were in France at the time and I can't remember what type of MAP I took.

I took it as soon as possible so hopefully that will improve its effectiveness, but is it worth doing a pregnancy test just in case?

This only happened 5 days ago...I'm just being uber paranoid. I hear that the MAP can affect your period and make it late anyway, is that right? I guess its different for everyone!

MAP is said to prevent 85% of pregnancies that would otherwise have been expected.

The most widely used one is Levornelle, and the pack information leaflet says that it can change muck up your cycle by up to 5 days. So yes, test if your period is late or very different.

I took Levonelle within half an hour of the condom breaking and DS is now four months old. I'm not trying to scare you but it can fail. If your period doesn't arrive within 5 days of the date you'd expect, definitely take a test.

Soapybubbles - whoa ok, so I guess even if you take it straight after theres still a risk!

Ok thanks guys, based on all your advice I think I will definitely take a pregnancy test later on just to be on the safe side! But until then I shall try and relax in the hope that it worked.

Do a test in ten days or so. Doing one later today isn't going to show you anything

Yeah its definitely too soon to take one now!

My last period was the week of 23rd June...so does that mean I was most fertile from july 4th to the 9th? If so then thats not good because thats when it happened!

I took the MAP 12 hours later and I now have a beautiful 8 month old boy. A shock at first but wouldn't change him for the world. 85% is a big number but someone has to be that 15%.

You're unlikely to get pregnant from a one off shag and even more unlikely to now you've taken the MAP so soon after sex

Haha ok! I'm fine, I just want to make sure I take all the necessary precautions, I know its highly unlikely but you never know!

Ahh Flissity83 thats great! To be honest, I'm really hoping that im not pregnant simply because I think I will find it so difficult to 'get rid' of the baby and like you and so many others have said, now you have beautiful children! But at the same time its just not good timing right now!

I always thought taking the map too soon stopped it being as effective? Isn't it better taken 48-72 hours afterwards or does that depend on the pill?

Oh really? I thought it was most effective if taken in the first 12 hours? Very confused, I guess it may depend on the pill - just wish I remembered which one I had taken!

Yes a light withdrawal bleed a few days after taking emergency contraception is quite common. And any emergency contraception is more effective the earlier it's taken after unprotected sex.

If your last period started on 23rd June, you are now on day 16 of your cycle, so (presuming you have a regular 28 day cycle) there is still the option of an emergency IUD (coil), which can be fitted up to day 19 of your cycle regardless of when you had the condom accident. The emergency IUD is very effective (from memory, a fairly recent study in Edinburgh found no subsequent pregnancies in 1000 women who had used the emergency IUD) and can be used even if you've already taken a "morning after" pill. If you think that's something you'd consider, contact your local family planning/sexual health clinic ASAP (or your GP if they offer IUD fittings).

Hi Joey it def can muck your cycle up I didn't really have a period at all for two months other than a light withdrawal bleed like u said. I did tests every few days from day I was due all negative. Do you know your cycle to know if you have ovulated as I can really tell based on mucus (sorry tmi) etc
