Hi everyone.

I've an appointment tomorrow to get the Mirena coil inserted. I'm really nervous- does it hurt getting it in? The box is bloody massive!! Shock

It is tiny (!) but think of it like a prolonged smear test. Recommend taking some nurofen beforehand as it can be quite twingy and achy for a while.

I had mine replaced (due to expiry, not problems!) a few months ago and had a nice chat with the doctor about how scary and big the box is compared to the device itself.

It isn't comfortable, but it doesn't hurt hurt. Brufen or paracetamol about an hour beforehand, and don't plan on doing too much afterwards (I tried to go back to work after I had my first one and didn't fare so well).

I have had two Mirenas; the first was pre baby and I will admit it was uncomfortable, even having had some ibuprofen beforehand.

Second time round was post baby and it was no bother at all, not painful in the slightest!

dont be put off by the size of the box as the mirena is very small. I'd take painkillers beforehand too. I found it uncomfortable rather than painful

I had my second put in under GA Grin so that gives you some idea of how bad I thought it was going in

Sorry not helpful at all, but I did find it painful and afterwards was like being in labour for the afternoon

Yes I've had 2 babies, but both delivered by section if that makes any difference?

I'm on naproxen anyway so obviously had one of those beforehand. All I felt was a bit of a twinge as it was inserted and was a bit crampy for most of the day afterwards.

The actual putting in isn't bad, but I had slight cramping afterwards. I know people who've had in done in their lunch hour and gone back to work, but I'm a wimp and like to go home and lie on the sofa. Grin

I think the thought of someone rummaging around up your fanjo is worse that the actual discomfort.

I was absolutely dreading it - have two dc's who were both sections. Was absolutely fine!!! No worse than a normal smear!

I've had 2 sections (no vaginal delivery) and have a pretty low pain threshold.
I've had two in (not at same timeWink) - it is a pinch when it goes in but only for a second, a few period pains in the hours afterwards and that's it. Honestly, take neurofen beforehand and you'll be fine.

Thanks everyone! When in labour with my first child, I got a few internals to see how dilated I was which were absolutely horrific-( I was sliding up the bed onto the pillows screaming!) and I'm terrified incase it's like that...

However had a smear a few months ago which was fine so fingers crossed ill be ok! Smile

I had one put in yesterday morning. It hurt a bit but only a little but I hadn't bothered to take any pain killers. I went back to work afterwards and it just felt like I was having a period for a few hours. Since about 5pm yesterday, I've had no symptoms. I wouldn't know anything had happened.

I had the Mirena fitted on Monday, no problem at all after putting it off for a year as I was terrifed! I've had 2 children who are now 8 & 4, I took some iburprofen before and it was fine, bled a little afterwards and had period type pain but all ok so far.

One thing though, my partner and I, erm, did the deed last night (was told by the Doctor it was ok and that I was good to go) and he said he felt as if the end of his willy was being poked by a pin?? I've since heard that this could be the strings and that do soften after a while? has anyone else experienced this??

It's uncomfortable, but not exactly painful.

I was a bit crampy for a couple of days afterwards.
