It doesn't hurt, but it is a bit uncomfortable. Have you had any examinations before? It's no worse than them.

Sorry - it does. It's bearable though. I felt more pain afterwards than when it was being put in.

I took a couple of ibuprofen beforehand and it was fine. I did have a massive bleed with my first period afterwards which I found I bit scary but it settled down straight afterwards.

It didn't hurt when I had it done. You just have to try and relax I guess...and remember nothing hurts like pushing a baby out Grin

Hmm, I've had 3 babies and only one hurt on the way out.

Will it be a battle with my GP to get?

I can only speak from my experience, but it was the nurse practitioner at my practice who was the one who dealt with coils. I had an initial consultation with her about it a few months after dc3 was born and she told me the pros and cons and all about the procedure and then she booked me an appointment for the next week to have it inserted. There was another nurse in the room too when I had it done, I think for hand holding purposes, but it was fine and was quick and easy. I had a check up about five weeks later to check it was still in place and to see of I was ok with it. It's been fine so far Smile

I had mine done by a family planning nurse. I would always choose the. Person who spends most of their time on these procedures iykwim. Like my gp does coils once a month. No thanks. Id rather a FP nurse who does them every day.

It didn't hurt much.

Good luck

I had ponstan prescribed by the family planning clinic (just one dose) to take before my appointment to help minimise cramping. I found it slightly uncomfortable rather than painful (had the mirena coil fitted rather than copper coil but it goes in the same place!)

I would go to a family planning clinic as they will have done more insertions and have more experience at fitting them.

If you've had 3 babies you'll be fine. I had my first one after DD1 was born- it was pretty darn uncomfortable, like a particularly hardcore smear test.

Had one put in after DD2, I barely felt a thing! Thought she was just examining me, then she just said "all done" and that was that!

I second ibuprofen. The worry beforehand was worse than the actual procedure. it is uncomfortable, but not painful. Its well worth it as once its in you dont need to worry for years! :-)

And FWIW, I had mine removed recently and it wasnt the slightest bit uncomfortable!
