Hello!
I have had our 3rd child, and am thinking I should get some contraception, but have no idea which one to get or where to start! I don't want to go on the pill as I often forget to take it (hence the 3 children!!!), but am concerned about weight gain, as I have a tendency to put weight on as I have PCOS. I am thinking the coil or the injection, can anyone offer me advice on either of these! Thanks!

I had Depo injections before having two DC's and had no issues at all, periods stopped completely after 2nd injection. Took approx 8 mths for them so come back properly tho when I stopped them to ttc. However when I went back on them after DC2 I had a lot of bleeding, almost constant for weeks, so GP suggested a coil. I had copper coil fitted at end of march and bleeding has reduced but not stopped. GP says this could still be residual effect of Depo though bleeding in early days of coil is also common. Fitting of coil wasn't pleasant but ime no worse than a smear - or indeed somethings we endure during childbirth! No other issues with coil though so sticking it out for a bit in hope bleeding settles into a normal menstrual pattern.

I had constant spotting/bleeding with the depo and put on hundreds of weight. I stopped going for it after getting 2 injections. I used the cerazette mini-pill for over 3 years and it stopped my periods. I have now had the mirena coil for 3 months (it is the coil that has hormones in it) and have had no side effects and very little bleeding. The copper coil (without hormones) can make bleeding longer, heavier and more painful so I chose the mirena one instead.

copper coil

mirena coil

I have the copper coil. Didn't want the injections or mirena coil due to the hormones. I have found it nothing less than excellent. I do bleed a little heavier but I was light before so it does not bother me. My periods were painfull for the first few months but soon calmed down. I did have some pain for a week or two after having it fitted but I find it the best form of contraception for me
