I went to the doctor 3 months ago about getting my heavy periods dealt with. Day 2 and 3 are extremely heavy and days 4 & 5 are ok. The reason i went is because i have started back at work so they are a lot harder to deal with when out and about.

I was sterilised 7 years ago so don't need it for contraception.

The doctor recommended going on the pill (Cilest). But for the first period he gave me some tablets to help slow the bleeding beginning with 'm'. These tablets didn't work and gave me a real bad upset stomach. Wasn't bothered as then i started with the pill.

First period which was in the 7 day pill break was just as heavy, but the whole period lasted longer (7 days) so actually worse than normal. Continued with new pack of pills on day 7.

When it came round to having the next 7 day pill break i continued with the next pack as i had a busy weekend with lots of events going on and didn't want the heavy bleeding again. But i did start bleeding, though very light (just 1 regular tampon required in the day) but this has been going on for 14 days!!!!

I thought the whole poing of starting straight with the next pack was to have no bleeding???

What should i do? Does the pill take a while to get working properly? Is the pill not strong enough for me??

Anyone with advice/experience??

I would go back, it's taken 3 attempts to get one which works, one worked for about 6 months, then when ds dropped more feeds the bleeding was continuous, another one didn't work after the first month. Now on a stronger one which does work in between, bleeding still heavy, but at least I can run packets together so reduce the number of them, apparently 1 break in 3 months is fine. Good to know I still have it in me if we were ever mad enough to ttc again!

If you have been given the mini pill, then break-through bleeding can be common. With some mini pills the dose can be doubled up to stop this. I would go back to the doctor and see if this is an option for you.

Cilest is one of the new generation ultra low dose pills so it's probably just not strong enough to override your natural hormones. That said, I've always found that the longer I'm on the pill the lighter my periods get until they dwindle to pretty much nothing.

Thanks for the advice, still continuing to bleed, i am interested to see what will happen when it comes to my 7 day break and what kind of period i will have then.

Interestingly i have taken cilest before and managed to concieve twins whilst on it! I did have about three episodes of the runs whilst on it when i got caught, i wonder if it wasn't strong enough for me then!

I will go back to the doctor and sort it out.
