lost Mirena coil

Hi there, im feeling a bit down. I had a baby in Oct (home birth), then in mid Dec had the Mirena coil fitted, after hearing such great things about it. I really wish i'd done more research! A couple of weeks ago, i started getting shooting pains, so checked for the strings, not there! Went to the doc, who confirmed that the coil wasnt there. I was still getting quite a few pains. I got an internal scan yesterday, the coil has perforated the womb and is now sitting next to my bowel! Im now waiting for an xray, then on for an op, hopefully a laporoscopy, just three wee holes under a general anaesthetic and a day in hosp. However the doc also said i may have to be cut (quite like a cesarean) and be in hosp for 4/5 days. My baby is only 3 months old and im breastfeeding. I just feel really crappy about the whole thing. Just wondering if anyone else has been through the same thing and what the outcome was? x

Just wanted to reply as I am in a similar position. Had Mirena fitted a few months ago. Had awful shooting pains for first few weeks but then a constant ache. When I went back at 6 weeks, the GP couldn't find the strings (even tho he'd left them longer than normal and said they would be cut at 6 weeks). Am still waiting on scan to find out what's going on. Apparently it's quite a common thing but no-one ever warned me this could happen. So fed up waiting to find out where it is. Hope you get sorted OP

Hi there, well i went in for day surgery today, after a week of real pain. This morning i was desperate to get it out!! The hospital were great, especially as i had my baby with me! I was back home by 1500hours. Im feeling quite sore and groggy. They managed to get it out with keyhole surgery, thank goodness. All the nurses/doctors said it was really unusual to have migrated through my womb. The doctor actually asked if i wanted another one fitted, i think not!!! He said it would be fitted properly this time, so wouldn't move. Which made me think, that the original Dr that fitted it at the local practice was at fault? Im just pleased to be rid of the coil, never again!! Valkilly, i hope you get it sorted soon. If i was you i would push to get things sorted quickly. The hosp said that there is very very little chance its done permanent damage. Im just pleased ive had my three babies and dont really want anymore! x

Glad to hear you're ok - but keyhole surgery?! Bloody Nora! I just want mine out too - even if they say it's where it should be, I just haven't felt right since I have had it in. Got a date now for my scan (cancellation) so hope to get sorted soon.

Hope you recover ok. Here, have a Brew

I'm glad it went well. My ob/gyn keeps pushing the Mirena on me, and I've told her that I personally know of 4 people that lost theirs, and have heard of many others on message boards that it has happened to, and she just poo-poos the idea that there would ever be any problem with the coil for anyone, ever, and smugly says that ALL ob/gyns think that it is the best thing that has ever happened to womankind and people just say bad things about it because they are ignorant.

I had 5 different dcs try to get mine out- most from gyne at hospital. No sign of strings what so ever. Had an ultrasound confirmed wasnt anywhere it shouldn't be, so they decided to dig around inside with no pain relief. I won't lie it was pretty grim and i wish I hadn't been able to feel it all as i was in tears. I had mine for 2 years and couldn't be happier I don't have it anymore, was always getting cramps/pains after sex etc. was great for periods tho- went from having heavy long bleeds to barely spotting. each to their own though- my mum swears by hers said it was perfect. I've had a child but still on the young side maybe?

Also to add, when they were doing my ultrasound it turned out i had a 4cm cyst on one of my ovaries, which made me worry even though I know they are common. Mirena makes you more likely to get cysts, my mum had those too and needed surgery to have them removed.

But hold in there, they WILL be able to get it out eventually, but it took forever with appointments all over from docs, fam planning, waiting to get referred, seeing consultant, having scan, back to consultant, so it's not a quick answer unfortunetly. I'd never heard of anyone with an issue and even my GP said she had been doing it for years, removed hundreds, and mine was the first she couldnt get out. I hope it brings you comfort to know you're not alone! I had no one and my partner just didn't understand x

Mine was also lost and I had it removed under GA after failed attempts by GP and gynaecologist . So glad it's out .
I was told afterwards that during the op he couldn't see nor feel the device so as last resort inserted a camera n found it tucked in away up at the back .
I'd an X-ray for it a month ago n it was sitting where it should be - so it's moved in that time . I'd never get another But will say it was a great contraception for me for 4 years until the hormone started to run out and my periods & severe PMT came back .
Each to their own though but that's my experience .
