What age did your child start gymnastics?

I think that gymnastics would suit DD who is quite a small build but very strong (swings in an alarming way off playground equipment!) and pretty fast. She's a lively child who I think would benefit from some sport. She's 3.5 now and I'm wondering whether to look for a gymnastics class now or maybe wait until after she's started school in September. If your child does gymnastics, what age did they start. Did they enjoy it when they first went?

DD was 6 - she had been doing ballet for 3 years previously. She is still doing it, 6hrs a week aged 11 1/2 - still loves it!

Her club have a pre-school group, and they look like they are enjoying it!

DD1 went at 3. DD2 is now 4 and has been going since she was 18 months.

They both love it, and DD1 is now in the preparation squad and does 6 1/2 hours a week. Sometimes I feel like I live there.

Personally, I think its better when they start when they're younger as then they have no fear. My DD2 happily trots along the beam with not a care in the world. Children who start when they're a lot older can sometimes seem to get scared more easily.

Big downside, they spend all their free time practising their new tricks, and as they learn to do more, so the stuff they do at home becomes scarier and scarier!

I think it is best to start young when they have no fear!

DD started at 5 - she didn't want to go before as she just wanted to be with me at soft-play/gym, not in a class with kids but no mummies. She was ready to go by herself by 5 and soon got into the swing of it. She still goes - and loves it - at 7.5 and has competed in gym competitions. But ds will start his gym class when he'll be 4.5.
