conducting?

Does anyone know where a dc can go to find out more about conducting (workshops?)? I have no idea at all about it.

Just wondering too if there are possibilities for dc to learn more about it, what kind of musical background they need.

I would say get dc playing an orchestral instrument and get lots of experience playing/watching at this stage. I would say dc needs to be an accomplished musician before he/she starts to think about conducting.
What instrument does dc play at the moment?

Zen, has she tried Sibelius for composing? DD uses it at Composers' Cub at school and loves it. not condcting I know but thought your DD might like it too.

no marialuisa, I don't know it at all but I'll have a look. dd doesn't do any kind of composition work but I'll have a look and see if I can figure it out! Thanks very much. How nice to have a composition club at school! That sounds great.

try your local music service for workshops??
Are you near to any music conservatories??

we're overseas so we don'thavethe same set-up but I could maybe send her to something over the summer in the UK (ifI knew what!). She has lessons with a prof here at the conservatory but they don't seem to have anything for that age

It is not really desperately important, just an idea, something she wanted to find out more about (as in a workshop maybe).

I found that Sibelius software online marialuisa but I don't think I am up to working with that at all. I would need someone to work with dd using it! Dd hasn't mentioned that she would like to write her own music yet but if it comes up, it is good to know about these things, so thanks for that tip. There is a woman near us who has a school where she specialises in teaching composition for children specifically but it is 1:1 tuition and I think that must be for the up and coming Yehudi Menuhins, not children like dd I don't think.

by which (YMs) I mean child genuises. The type who practice 6 hours a day and travel round the world to international youth competitions all the time. Different league altogether. I think that school is aimed at dc of that type.

My cousin is a professional conductor, although I have no idea how he got into it .

I'd contact your local music college, or university that has a music department and find out if they run summer schools or tuition for younger pupils.

It's a good career choice, by the way. Conductors get paid a lot more than most of the musicians in an orchestra!!
