Double Bass

Does anyone have DC who play the double bass? DS (16) is keen to take it up as he feels it would expand his skill base and improve his general musicality (he plays guitar and piano at the mo)

I was just wondering about the technical side (including transporting the bloody thing!)

Is it a tricky instrument to master?

My ex boss is a professional bass player, agree tricky to transport - their car choice is planned around it! Would he be learning it at school or home?

SAme strrings as bass guitar.
Different technique.
Started learning when I was 14....did grade 5 within the year but was a grade 8 violin so had some transferable technique. It is heaps of fun......a really good money earner.....classical, jazz, big band and took me to Sweden, America etc.
I am 5ft nothing and used to have a carrying strap which meant I could fling it over my shoulder....have taken it on planes, trains , underground etc. I did have to stoop slightly so from behind looked like a demented turtle as all you could see was my feet.
Still play today....even did a turn on my wedding day in me dress at the evening do...
CArs.... we used to get it into a volvo 340......put front seat down flat and slide in neck first through door.....
hope this helps......do it...fun....fun....fun!!
