hi all.

I'm looking to see if anyone can recommend any book/DVD/strategy for improving flexibility for men.

dh is fit and healthy and we gym regularly with hour long runs and weights. but he has finally realised that his total lack of flexibility is really not good and can cause other injuries.

he's expressed an interest to try yoga yippeee... an achievement for a muscle mad dude like him.
but he feels so far off where he should be he's discouraged to join a yoga class And specifically wants something for ultimate beginners or men (he thinks all men are unable to bend over)

can anyone recommend any books or DVDs to get him started? thanks in advance!Wink

Try Hatha yoga. It's a very basic straightforward style of yoga that is great for beginners.

You could find a class or video/youtube etc

I am a yoga teacher, I teach complete beginners and about a third of the class typically are men. Not all men are unable to bend over Grin but the ones who run, cycle, play football etc often are...

Would he be more comfortable with a male yoga teacher? There aren't a massive number of them about but they do exist, and often men feel more comfortable with a male teacher so there'll be a higher proportion of men in the class...

A class will be better than a book or DVD for a beginner, because a DVD can't tell you when you're doing it wrong!

hi ladies thanks for your replies. as for classes well we live abroad so the only classes I can find which are instructed in English are for bikram which I think will be too much too soon and put him off.
I think a regular gentle into at home will hopefully help.

Has he looked at a pilates reformer class? You don't feel like you're 'on show' quite as much as a yoga.

It's great for core strength as well as flexibility, so maybe it would appeal to him?

Go to YouTube and search 'yoga flexibility men' - it should give you a number of things he could try out. You get 40 main clips, so would give him a taster without parting with any money.

thanks everyone for suggestions. I've found a series of moves on the "men's health" website which I linked to him and he seems keen since its from men's health and explains the benefits of each move what its targeting, working, stretching or relaxing... Wink

along with my non-expert guidance its a start which is more than I could have asked for. he'll be bending over in no time Grin Hmm maybe not. Grin
