Started spinning about 5 weeks ago, doing 45 mins 3 times per week.am very petite.. 5'3" and usually 7 st 4ibs. Weighed myself this morning and am now 4 lbs heavier?

Why is this?

Obviously not wanting to loose weight but wasn't wanting to put it on either! Just want to be fitter and more toned.

Muscle is a lot heavier than body fat, volume for volume - you have probably lost fat and gained muscle.

Muscle defiantly, I'm the same.

I look slimmer when I'm heavier as I'm more toned Smile

It's very unlikely if not impossible for spinning to have caused you to gain 4lbs of muscle in 5 weeks, sorry. Has your diet changed? How are your clothes fitting compared to before?

3 x a week for 5 weeks at max effort could add a fair bit of muscle?! Maybe it was partly cyclical/hormonal/ fluid retention or broken scales!

I was eating a bit more chocolate due to Easter and just finished AF so could be a mixture of things. Clothes still fit fine and I feel much fitter,if not sore!
thanks for your thoughts

I wouldn't worry too much if you are happy you aren't doing a "well I've been to a spinning class therefore it won't hurt if I eat 3 Easter eggs" routinely Grin. Easter eggs and AF will probably be playing their part but the body can behave a bit strangely when you start exercising regularly when previously you did little. It should settle down in a few more weeks.

Spinning will definitely burn lots of calories, tone your muscles, improve your fitness. It won't cause you to gain 2 stone of muscle by this time next year if you keep it up. Even body builders struggle to gain lbs of muscle and they have to eat lots and lots of calories in the form of protein and lift lots and lots of weight to do it. That's just the men, for women it is even harder. Your fat:muscle ratio should change for the better but your weight probably won't fluctuate (certainly not upwards) by much from spinning alone. Think about it, how many hugely muscular cyclists (outside a velodrome) do you seeHmm?
