My friend get cheap electricity at night, does everyone get a cheap rate at night or is it just because she has storage heaters...

If you use a lot of electricity at night (around 25-30% of your overall usage at least), then provided you have the right sort of electricity meter you will tend to save money by electing to have an 'econony 7' tariff where you get 7 hours of cheap electricity at night but pay slightly more for your daytime consumption. Anyone can do it, but it's not usually cost effective unless you have storage heaters.

thanks snorkle, so its not at a cheaper rate for everyone then.. ie its not worth me setting my washing machine to come on at 6am, everyday...

No, RumMum, unless your electricity bills show 2 seperate readings for night and normal use you'll be paying the same whatever the time. Only benefit in running the washing at 6am is if you want to hang the washing outside at 8.

BUT, does anyone know of a green energy provider that can cope with a dual tariff?
we have normal and one that's not economy 7, some other rate that used to power the awful storage heaters in this house- we only use it for washing machine and occassional tumble dryer now.
