Realistic expectations of getting perm, full time work when 5 months pregnant.

DH and I are, hopefully, moving back to the UK in the next month.
I am 18 weeks pregnant. How realistic is it to expect to get a job when I am 5 months pregnant, given that any future employer will have to then recruit maternity cover within 4 months for at least 6.

I am assuming that even though it is illegal to descriminate on grounds of pregnancy that doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I had already decided to look for contract work and then take the 6 months and then apply for permanant. I just wondered if folk thought and whether it was worth applying for perm positions too.

Sector is charity fundraising/marketing.

I do know someone that employed someone who was pregnant but I think it's probably a rarity. If you plan to stay after maternity leave I don't think it should put you off applying.

it is illegal to descriminate on grounds of pregnancy but I think you are right they would find a good reason why a different candidate was "better" for the job.

I think your idea about contract work is a better one or even be applying for jobs speculatively but let them know you aren't available until 9 months after baby is born.

Depends what you do and how in demand you and your skills are. IME charities can be more family friendly so I wouldn't let it put you off applying, you're not losing anything by doing so.

I have no knowledge of your sector but wanted to add I know of several people who found employment whilst pregnant Best of luck.

I know someone who got a fabulous job while very pregnant but they did insist she only take 6 weeks mat leave . No harm applying for jobs and, if you do well at interview, they may well bear you in mind but don't think most employers would be keen.

I employed someone who was 6 months pregnant at the interview and 7 months on her first day in the job. She had very specific skills that I needed, but also I thought she was brave to come for the interview and really liked admired her for it tbh
