Just reminded by the sweary bottle man thread about a conversation dh and I had about how we both have or in my case had a job where we were regularly sworn at. Most of our friends are the same. I was a sales assistant, dh a teacher. Most of our friends are teachers, nurses and other public sectory types. WOnderd if it was the same across the board?

I don't think that I have ever been sworn at in my line of work, but then I'm not in contact with the general public.

Yes, I worked in a couple of jobs where you would get regularly sworn at, not everyday, but regularly enough. You do get immune to it though. I always used to be unfailingly polite back, that usually works. Makes them look a right twunt aswell.

And that was for the railway.

Oh, yes, the painfully polite method worked for me too.

Only once - and I hung up on him immediately. But I am not in contact with general public either.

He is a very senior member of my company and I reported him immediately, but for some reason they just let him get away with it. But a new regime is coming soon - and then....

I am really sorry for those of you who have to put up with this from members of the public - I often ensure I make complaints when I do not get the service I expect, but I would never swear at somebody in those circumstances.

Never. I work in a uni.
Occasionally a Batty Elderly Professor will swear which is highly amusing. Also, sometimes a student who swears in front of her friends will let something slip out (not in an aggressive way, just, eg 'I was like, oh fuck!') and get all embarrassed. It's very sweet.

Schools used to be like this, of course. Shame they're not any more.

I'm a lawyer. Only sworn at by client once in many years who then rang to apologise saying "I'm a complete b*&^% aren't I". I said "yes" hung up and refused to deal with them again. Would not want a job where people felt they had a licence to abuse you, however, if you work for Npower's customer services, then I cannot be held responsible for my actions.

Constantly

Worst was working in a public library. Now working in a secondary school.

Ooh yes, NPower although I have to say I never swear at them, just sigh a lot and argue vehemently (only occasional sobs, honest)

Yes when I was a nurse (many moons ago). Not since I changed careers and work with the police.
