How much holiday is the norm nowadays?

I have just been made redundant after 11 years at a charity, previously in City insurance companies.

I had 25 days holiday plus 12 days christmas and bank holiday.

Went for a interview on saturday and was told holiday was "satutory" which I think means 4 weeks including bank holiday.

Agency told me this is the norm nowadays. Is this true?

No, statutory is 24 days including bank holidays. It's going up to 28 days in (I think) late 2008.

What is currently normal in office based work is between 20 and 25 days holiday, plus public holidays (It's a bit different in factories, etc because so many people work shifts and in service industries because they cover public holidays)

Not sure why you got 12 days christmas and bank holiday. There are 8. Did the charity shut over christmas without making you use holiday? I have to say, those would normally be taken out of the holiday entitlement but as fixed days (i.e. you had to take them when you were told to) rather than on top of holiday and bank holidays.

Hope that helps. Hopefully private sector is more money to make up for less holiday.

4 weeks plus bank hols (which is about 10) is what I always found to be the norm. 25 days and above shows a more progressive employer (doesn't take much, does it).

So I think the 'including bank holidays' bit misleading. But I don't know what normal is afor an agency.

The office did get closed over christmas and we got that extra.

The agency is the employment agency that got me the interview.

The job i went for is a bookeeping role in a optitions.

Oh, sounds like you had a good holiday deal at the last place. Might be a bit of a come down I'm afraid.

Just make sure that if you get 'statutory holiday only' It's at least 16 days plus bank holidays - i.e. 24 in total and that it goes up next year. To be honest, I'd be surprised if they mean that. People often get confused with holiday laws and say statutory when they mean four weeks plus bank holidays.

Fingers crossed for you.
