Interview advice

Had an interview yesterday and came out feeling fairly confident that it had gone better than previous attempts. But didn't get the job. Was given feedback, but I know my main problem is I'm just rubbish in interviews because i get so nervous. On trying to answer the first question my voice always quivers and shakes and i just can't seem to put the act on of acting confident. Once I've ansered a few questions I gain some confidence but I'm no good at the thinking on my feet and answering the questions, even though i can probably answer them given a bit of time to think.

Am working at the moment on a temporary contract, but would really like a permanent contract again, but can't see myself getting another job unless i can shake the nerves. Any suggestions, funny or serious, please(need cheering up).

Sorry to hear you're feeling down about this. My instinct, FWIW, is that one really good experience could really boost your confidence. Could you apply for something you are less bothered about, just for the practice? I've gone along to several interviews for this reason; sounds a bit mad to put yourself through the process without really wanting the job, but you always learn something - and one really positive interview could turn the tide for you. Easier to be confident under those circs - and who knows, it might lead somewhere; I once went for a job I didn't especially want, and got offered my perfect job!

You need to anticipate the questions so that you can think in advance what your answers will be. Write down all the questions from your last interview that you can remember, and think what your ideal answers would have been (had you not been so nervous, thinking on feet etc).

Good point, Elasticwoman - and reminds me about an excellent book called something like Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions. Much more than a list of questions/answers - talks you through the whole process of preparing for and doing interviews.

Have you tried going in to interview with your head saying "well it doesn't matter whether i get it or not i'm just along for the ride..." ok so the fact that you have filled in form and turned up to interview prob says that's not the case, but does it make any sense??
My DH has one theory about imagining the panel naked or wearing wigs or something - that just would make me giggle it must be a man thing...
