Is it me or is the calibre of applicants for jobs at an all time low??

Previously when recruiting I have sent out forms/job descriptions to anyone who asked for them. I quickly learnt that it was a waste of time as the uptake was low due to time-wasters just using it to justify their benefits by pretending top be seeking work. I always have a thorough, friendy chat initially to ensure the applicants have all the information they require, before persuing the application. Obviously there are some applicants who are applying to several jobs or who's circumstances change along the way. so they don't persue the application. Not got a problem with that! This round we decided to ask applicants to come out & collect the forms to get round the postal strike & also to have an informal visit prior to formal interview, so both parties could have a chance to chat. Out of 5 applicants one has not turned up 3 times, having altered her appointments, 3 have not turned up -no explanation, one had a genuine family emergency & has re-booked to come this afternoon (watch this space)

I just get so at the waste of time & effort it's so bloody rude!! I know everyone shrugs their shoulders & says " oh kids today" but these are not all youngsters it's across the age range!

They all seem to want fulltime wages for part-time hours & have no oomph or initiative. I despair of the society we are becoming, I really do!!

Rant over

AIBU to expect a common courtesy of a phone call or email if an apppointment is missed?

Think of it as a short-cut - at least you know not to offer them an interview now!

Hope you find someone suitable soon.
