I applied for a new position within my company and got it, but my current manager won't release me until October exactly four months after getting the job. Can they do this? If I went externally I'd have to give 8 weeks. Thanks

I've certainly seen it happen at a previous place. It did cause some bad feeling, but old and new manager were not exactly best buddies in the first place.

Do you know what work you'll be doing in that time? Is it to finish a particular project or to make sure duties are handed over? Can you draw up a plan for handing things over (one-to-one sessions and so on as required?) which could be completed sooner than the 4 months? Might not make any difference, but it's worth a shot.

Are you transferring to a different dept with a new Manager? I would speak to your new manager and see if they can arrange a more suitable transfer date.

What are the reasons given for a 4 month notice needed?
