Racism at school (not against us, but witnessed)

My dd1 is almost 13, in s1 (Scotland) and very caring and sensitive.

One of her teachers is Jewish. Last week, this teacher was talking with a colleague at the door of the room as the students settled down. One boy started making comments about how Jewish people are stupid, lazy or they'd have run away from the Nazis.

Dd1 was appalled! We've always tried to be sensitive about this stuff (partly as her paternal grandfather is German) but because you just should be - the holocaust is nothing to joke about! M dc have visited Anne Frank's house in Amsterdam and dd1 (and this boy) studied WW2 as a topic and watched (with parental permission) "The Boy In Striped Pyjamas" (in her school most pupils were 12 by then which is it's rating, we were given an orientation meeting to deal with it - dd1 was upset but in her words "glad I know it happened")

I think this boy is being anti-Semitic as an attention seeking thing, but it's not on!!

Do you think I should mention this to the Jewish history teacher? (they're covering early Scotland and William Wallace right now!!) or to a more senior person. Or ignore?? I'm very uncomfortable about it!

Before Christmas a boy at DS's school made an anti semetic "joke" to a Jewish boy. That boy got reported by one of the kids and he got suspended for a day. It never happened again.

Zero tolerance is the only way to deal with this kind of thing.

Well done, weegie! I think it's actually better for your dd to see that you have both done the right thing even if it's a bit scary. So sad that this behaviour is still happening.

Having been in the USA over Christmas - where racist abuse was loud and persistent ... a guy ranted at DD as we walked along and we got called "white bastards" ... it felt like going back in time -
racism is horrible and the fact that the UK is intolerant of it is something worth standing up for.

Shortly after posting yesterday, I had the radio on in the car and caught the start of 'Beyond belief' - the subject was the rise of anti-semitism in Europe.
I assume timed because Holocaust memorial day was on Sunday. Very timely, weegie.

Good for you weegie. Perhaps the school could show the film that was on BBC a week or so ago about a Jewish lady that lived in Poland at the start of WW2 and she was moved from ghetto to concentration camp to death camp and was liberated from Belsen. It was a very good film, such horrors told by such a calm and strong woman. The film title was her name and the number tattoo on her arm, I forget it now will find out if anyone is interested I saved in on the sky plus for DH to watch.
