Dd1 is in year 3 and things are going ok work wise, she is in top groups for all subjects and enjoys school and I am very pleased with her progress.

However last year, year 3 went swimming, were able to learn a musical instrument and amongst other things they had a halloween disco.

This year they are doing none of that. Swimming was mentioned but hasn't happened, and dd1 asked her teacher about musical instruments and was told to ask someone else.
Apparently the halloween disco was not done this year because of when halloween and the half term fell.

It just seems like they can't be bothered really and I feel it's unfair cos the kids are missing out.
Dd1 was really looking forward to getting to learn an instrument and now no one is interested.

A few of the other parents have grumbled about how unorganised the school seem to be getting but don't seem overly concerned.

Am I just being picky ?

It could be a sign that the school is starting to go downhill?

When my dd started at her school, they did French. Then it stopped for about 3 years (and Ofsted gave the school a very poor report). Now, with a new Headteacher, French is being taught again.

Have you approached the Head? You could also contact your parent governor.

Speak with the Headmistress - ask why the changes?
Join the PTA and organise a Christmas Disco. Phone LEA and enquire about individual music tution.

I can understand why you were expecting more if that is always what has happened in the past but be proactive!

Were the swimming and musicla instrumnet part fo the general curriculum ? If so approach your teacher or year head and ask if there are any plans to do it later in the school year (may be on a rotational basis with other classes)or perhaps they are offering something different this year instead which you may not realise. Disco I would have said was down to the year group parents or PTA to organise not the school.

Oh no i know the disco's aren't the job of the school but I just meant it seemed to be yet another thing that was being stopped.

No Cod I'm not on the PTA, don't think they'd take kindly to me taking Ds everywhere with me would they.

If the school had never done any of these things then i wouldn't mind, but they did all of them last year and previous years as far as I know.

They did do swimming last year but were then told they would do it year 3 too, but they aren't.

Last year year 3's were givenm a letter about musical instruments in the first week they went back. They then had to pay and were given an instrument.

Usually the 2 year 3 classes take it in turns termly for the swimming, but neither has been.

yeah I agree with others here, disco is certainly a PTA thing. What about organising a Christmas dicso nutty?
swimming is usually done at junior level. Don't know much about musical instruments. At our infant school 2 of the teachers do recorder with the Year 2s but I think that's because they are prepared to do it IYSWIM.
Is the music done by outside teachers? Worth enquiring of the LEA i think.

I think the music is done by teachers already in the school, will find out.

Haven't a clue who is on the PTA, will find that out too.

Go, even if it's just to be nosey!

I like ours - you get out for evening and get a drink, get to know what's going on, what's planned for the kids and you get your say in it. Plus you can suggest things - so you could suggest a disco.

Mm, tricky nutty. Our meetings start at 8-8.15 but plenty of people come along late as well. I think people just think it's good that you come along.

There might even be a reason the halloween disco was dropped - maybe the PTA have something else in mind to spend the money on.

But does the Halloween disco cost? Ours were £2 a ticket. I made DH go and also invited DS's friend (who will start reception in January) so that was £8 because I took the unilateral decision that 1yo DD would be free. Then I bought 1 can of lager, 1 glass red wine, 3 cartons of pop, 3 bags of sweets, 2 packets of monster munch (DH did that last one I thought they'd had enough). So might not have made much but surely not a loss?
