Do you send with proof of post, or recorded delivery? How much do both insure up to do you know?

Ordinary post covers up to £30 I think (with cert of posting). No idea how long it takes to claim.

Above that you have to pay extra per increased amount. Will check Royal Mail site, hang on a sec...

It's up to £36 for standard 1st or 2nd, and recorded - can't find details of increased cover or charges on the website though - you'll have to ask in the PO I think.

If you want more than £36 cover than you have to go special delivery or standard parcels (but that has to be a parcel).

Special will cover up to £250 but costs about £4 at min (letter) weight, you can cover for more compensation by paying extra. It is pretty costly although in some cases not much more than the other services - your PO should give you a variety of options for each individual parcel so you can choose what is most cost effective and efficiant.

With standard parcel you can insure for £100 for an extra £1 or so or for £250 or more by paying a bit more.

Standard parcel (SP) takes longer than special delivery (SD) and will usually suffice for ebay sales which are not too valuable IMO. SP is not secure and can get lost so you need to keep your receipts until you get feedback really. With SD you can track your items and it is far more secure.

btw I only send recorded now as so many people seem to be taking to P* on ebay -it's not much more expensive than sending 1st or 2nd (63p extra last time I posted). I like to be able to see if something has been signed for now.

With either proof of posting or recorded you will have to deal with supposedly undelivered items though - the intended recipient cannot chase undelivered items. It takes about 8 weeks to follow something up and you ideally need to know the weight of the item and what postage you paid for the forms. So make a note or keep all your reciepts from the PO.

I usually do proof of postage only up to about £10 - 15, then recorded for more. I also email the person to let them know the recorded delivery code so they know in advance it has been posted and don't p*ss me about.
