Ok we put our old trailer tent on e bay hoping to get 300.00 so put a reserve of 300.00 on it.
Its now up to 300.00 with 55 watchers and 1 1/2 days to go.
Ive had lots of interest and questions.
A man is coming to look tonight and offerred 500.00 cash for me to take it off ebay so he can buy it tonight.
Im glad of 500.00 but with 55 watchers do you think i`d be mad-please be honest ?
Could i be potentailly losing money and we need every penny towards a caravan.
If anyone has time to look its item no.
220220594162 i would be grateful.

to be honest it looks like a bargain at £300. it is one of those situations where you have to decide if you want the money quicker or to take the chance.

You will have 55 cross watchers.

Thought you couldn't take it off if you have bids

Isn't there a rule about taking something off eBay if it already has bids??

I think you can take it off if there are bids, but there has to be more than (I think) 12 hours to run on the auction. You have to be able to take it off, otherwise what if it got stolen, or damaged?

Generally, you will find that someone who wants you to end the listing early does so because they are looking to get a bargain, to sell it on maybe. it usually means that it will go for more. 55 watchers is a lot, and you do already have a good price with a good amount of time to run.

If you do a completed listings search you can see how much they go for, there is one that went for about £400 but I think is smaller than yours and a VGC one from about 1998 that went for nearly £700! So you might be missing out, it's a gamble I guess.

I think you just have to ask why he isn't just bidding with everyone else?

What is his ebay ID?

Leave the auction to run its course. I've always ended up better off by it and you know you're doing it properly.

My brother was offered cash for some equipment for sale on ebay a few months back but declined and was £500 better off in the end . 55 watchers with 1 1\2 days to go is good going and should make the final few minutes fun to watch. Good luck

I was offered £500 for Dh's car, the man said we wouldn;t get much more for it, it sold for £890.

Well, personally I would take the view that anything extra you get over the £300 you wanted is a bonus and leave the auction running. At least through eBay you have the option of leaving feedback, making a complaint etc, you have no recourse if it all goes tits up offline.

LazyLinePainterJane · 10/04/2008 17:25

Well, lets look at it from another point of view....if he only thought it was worth £300, why on earth would he offer £500 for it?!!?

Its quite normal when selling cars etc for people to come and look first before bidding. So if he puts pressure on you to sell to him off ebay because he came to look tell him two more are coming tomorrow morning to have a look before bidding.
DP sold his knackered landrover on ebay, we had lots of questions and interest, three people locally came to look at it before bidding. In the end it sold to someone who bid without seeing because he knew exactly what he wanted it for (spares! The engine had blown up).
Agree with the others to let the auction run its course. If he tries to get you to end the auction tonight don't give in. Make sure there is someone else with you as well.

ps please come back tomorrow and tell us how much it sold for - I was just about to add it to 'items I'm watching' but don't want to have you thinking there are now 10,000 watchers, as there will be with all us nosey mumsnetters wanting to know how much it goes for in the end!

Leave it on! Its against rules, plus theres
no guarantee he'll be reliable, theres a great chance it'll go for a higher sum

I would get him to bid £500 on the auction, and then if he is the highest bidder, and you want to end the auction early to sell to the highest bidder, you can. You will then know if the current high bidder has bid £500+.

To be honest, without searching through completed items, I don't think yours will go for top whack. Mainly because your feedback is only 1. Although this doesn't matter as much when you are collecting in person, some people will take it into account. You have also listed some faults, which takes down its value. How old is the trailer? Somebody could intimate that it is two years old from the listing. I would add a note to say exactly how old it is.

Don't let anybody pay by Paypal whatever you do. Only accept cash.

It is not against the rules to end the auction to sell to the highest bidder via Ebay. You can also do this in the last 12 hours.

From ebay:

It is acceptable for sellers to end a listing early and sell an item to the highest bidder at their current bid price. Bidders are permitted to contact sellers with requests to end a listing early for this reason; however, sellers are under no obligation to do so.

If you deal outside of Ebay with this buyer, and sell it privately, you will save yourself £23 in Ebay fees. You're not meant to do that though.
