I think it's because you've reached the limit of the amount you can spend per year before you have to verify your account (give them your bank details)
They're a total pain and take TEN DAYS to clear!
email all sellers and apologize if I were you..

Paypal my dear. I think if you log into your paypal account it will tell you why you can only do e-cheques, just in case I'm wrong.

As far as I remember, to verify your account youhave to give them your bank details, and they make a deposit of a few pence, and you have to get back to them and tell them how many pence it was to prove that you are the owner of the account. After that, they remove money directly from your account, rather than going through your debit/credit card.

It's a right old pain in the arse though, so annoying that they don't email you first when you're about to hit your limit. The verification process can take a couple of days I think.

I've been through that process - I think something odd is going on

I have had this twice- once when I reached the limit on my paypal account and had to do something to extend the limit, but I can't remember what. The other time was when the credit card I had on file had expired - try to see if it's that.

Aha! Were you with the Woolwich and now it's Barclays? I've just realised reading this post, that I had to change my bank details because everything changed when the devils bank took over and I don't recall doing the few pence thing!!!when it changed - those e cheques are a nightmare!

Thanks for the light bulb experience.

Just a thought - has one of your cards expired that you had registered with Paypal? If so, you will need to go into your Paypal account to change your card details.
