Can I survive a year without buying clothes?

(763 Posts)

I like shopping, especially pretty day dresses, and I have spent much of 2013 building up a decent amount of clothes after bring pregnant and eating cake changed my shape though I have lost my preg weight now. (Only 2 years later!) grin.

I was having a look through the other day, and I think I could save a fortune if I made myself not shop for clothes or shoes in 2014. It could help financially to pay back the overdraft etc, and maybe just maybe I could save some money. I can definitely dress well for the year, but will people notice that I'm sporting the same clothes?

Would anyone like to join me in my quest to not shop in 2014?

Wow! I would love that level of willpower, but doubt I'll be able to make it through January without seeing something I actively need blush. In my defence I am extremely weak willed 37 weeks pregnant with DC4 and just don't know how my post-pregnancy wardrobe is going to pan out

I would absolutely love to join you as I spend a small fortune on clothes, last few ordered at lunchtime today blush.

Have debts to repay and hate myself for being so weak, would be very helpful to join a thread to encourage each other. Not sure about a whole year though..... <weak already..>

Easy?? How is it easy when you live for clothes <sob>

I'm afraid it's not much of a challenge for me as can rarely afford clothes. I would fail this time though as I need a new pack of £1.99 knickers

I would join you, but it would be an unfair contest as I rarely buy new clothes anyway.

Yes, but you'll need a whole new wardrobe in 2015. I learned this when pregnant with DD.

I was thinking I would start on the 1st January- a New Years Resolution for myself. I think I realised I had a small problem when I found 2 dresses that still had labels on blush.

Buy classics.

I haven't bought any clothes, summer or winter for two years and I'm still wearing some items from five years ago.

It does need to be people who would actually find it hard not to buy clothes! Not much of a challenge otherwise grin!

1st Jan sounds good.

Are we in? cuts up credit card

ShylaMcClaus Mon 23-Dec-13 23:35:26

I'm out, then, Belize. DH and I just replace things grin

Really want to join this challenge!

I need nothing and yet I keep buying clothes!

Definitely count me in!

I would try it but I would never try it in January, too many sales for me grin

Good luck though!

Macca, I'm giving my credit card to a friend to hide in her house tomorrow as I cannot trust myself blush. It is then for pure emergencies which possibly don't include needing a new coat in the New Year!

Consider it cut up.

Yeah you need to be an addict Shyla!

I really need in. Have a cupboard full of stuff I never wear yet I keep buying more. I would absolutely love to get through a whole year without buying anything. I also have debts and it would be nice to pay some off without adding to it.

Any idea where I should resurrect this thread so it doesn't disappear after 90 days?

I should do this, I have complete wardrobes from size 22=24, where I am now, down to 14 where I was for a month twenty years ago.

I'd like to get to the point where I buy things because I like and need them, but where I don't feel guilty about spending money I don't have. blush

I have done this this year and it got easier, only a sharp haircut needed,

I just spent on leggings/opaque tights

I customised 'old' dresses into skirts

I have a better idea this next year what I 'need' to buy

Count me in.

I could probably go for another 30 years without needing any clothes.

Most of the clothes in my wardrobe have never been worn. I wear the same practical clothes all the time, while the rest of my wardrobe sits there looking glamorous and unworn.

It is shameful.

The internet has been the worst possible thing for me in terms of making excessive shopping way too easy.

I think it's a fabulous challenge- can I join??

Are we allowed to set a rule for: pants / socks / tights or stockings etc (I need these for work, and they ladder simply by looking at them sad ) are permitted?

But everything else clothes wise is banned?

Dreaming of how much money I'll save by not buying "stuff"
