Our weekly shopping bill is alimony as much as our mortgage and its getting higher so trying to save money where we can without being completely miserly. Today I decided to try out lidl for the weekly shop (I know a similar thread has been started about Aldi but we don't have one here). Any other money saving supermarket tips shop tips appreciated.

I couldn't get my whole list at Lidl do I'll have to go to tesco tomorrow to finish off but I was pleasantly surprised at what I got for cheaper than what I've been paying at tesco:

Kiwi fruit 5 for £1 (4 for £1 at tesco)
Large bag of potatoes £2.35 (£2.74 at tesco)
Mushrooms 89p (£1 at tesco for smaller pack)
Blueberries £1.25 (£2)
Red onions 63p (£1)
Carrots 79p (£1)
Milk £1 (not sure what it usually is but more than £1)
Premium pork sausages £1.49 (tesco £2.89)
Sliced crumbed ham £1.29 (2 packs £3)
Salad 89p (£1)
Babybel £1.74 (can't remener what I pay at tesco)
Fruit museli £1.49
Fresh Orange juice £1.08 (much bigger carton than tesco equivalent)
Whole meal pitta 39p (89p)
Part baked baguettes 39p (£1)
Tortillas 39p (£1)
Chicken thighs £2.65 (stopped buying at tesco as went up to £5! been buying whole chickens on 3 for £10 instead)
2 fillets Scottish salmon £2.69 (wouldn't buy at tesco too expensive)
3 large chicken breasts £3.99 (same price at tesco for 2 small breasts)

Obviously I can't comment on how quality compares yet but I will report back.

What you mean you left without buying a pressure washer Shock

Did you notice the avocado sanitary towels?

annabelcaramel · 10/05/2013 20:39

Sanitary towels for avocados???
Or avocado coloured???

Either way, I'm intrigued

Report
pizzaqueen · 10/05/2013 20:41

I can't say I did, although I didn't look at the toiletries or cleaning products. Why avocado?

If DP was with me we would probably have left with a pressure washer.

My wine is clearly far stronger than I thought - I'm going to wake up tomorrow thinking this is all a bizarre dream. Whatever next - asparagus tampax???

You need to try the chorizo sausage, shortbread biscuits, ice cream in blue tubs, bread flour, fizzy water, rump steak, parmesan cheese, fruit yoghurts, creme fraiche, cider and vine tomatoes

Then you will have discovered all the true bargains...

Stuff I buy from lidl:

Biscuits - custard creams are nicer than the premium brands
Powder stain remover - just as good as vanish.
Tinned tomatoes/Passata
Bolognaise sauce in jars
Super noodles - 18p
Cereals - Rice Krispies and bran flakes
Tinned spaghetti

Stuff I don't like:
Weetabiz - funny consistency
Cornflakes - something not right about them
Crisps - older children don't like them

I buy from lidl:

Cereal (apart from bran flakes)
Bread
Veg
Ham
Cheese
Milk
Yogurts
Fizzy water
Cartons of fruit juice for lunches
Wipes for bathroom
Washing liquid
Cat food (dry biscuit & tins)

Aldi is better for dog food, brioche, meat & chicken, sausages, baking products, eggs, wine, fruit juice (1l cartons)

Their washing liquid 2 in 1: Formil is great. Way cheaper than Bold and has not once irritated our 17 m/o DD's skin and gets thing nice and clean.

I love the Lidl bakery - cheesey topped rolls and pannini. Also buy the juice cartons for lunchboxes, mini magnum type icecreams ( 12 for £1.99) and milk and orange juice are good and cheaper. I seem to be buying more and more from Lidl each week and seeing good savings.Staff are fast , efficient and really friendly.

The ham/ salami/chorizo is excellent - also free range chicken fur around £5.
We get a 'big shop' from Lidl and then I supplement it with some naice' from Waitrose.

Increasingly we are buying all our fruit/veg from Lidl as it us excellent quality and far cheaper than the other supermarkets.

Tesco is eye wateringly expensive these days, might as well shop at Waitrose.

Cheese topped batches, maple and pecan twists, croissants, chocolate croissants - I go at quarter to 4 because they finish baking at 4 and I can swoop in and buy them all hot and fresh ...I have to physically restrain myself from jumping into the baskets

I've done two lidl shops now - and love it! The bargains are great! Plus, with a bit of creativity I've managed to find everything on the list... I'm feeling left out though, our lidl doesn't have a bakery!
Only thing is the check-out... it's intense, I've not worked out how to keep up with them when there is only a 1 ft square of space that they sling your shopping into at break neck speed?! I get all my bags opened in the trolley first... so I am prepared... just not prepared enough Grin

Lidl face cream, liquid soap, wet wipes, soap, washing powder, chocolate, passata and grated italian cheese are all excellent value. I wish there was a Lidl near me. I only get the chance to go there occasionally Sad
