For those of us buying the cheapest supermarket (etc.) ranges - it's worth knowing the ones that are properly palatable!

Sainsbury's Basics fairtrade teabags have been mentioned elsewhere - they're definitely worth buying.

Tesco's Value porridge oats (about 75p/kilo) are perfectly okay

Please add others you are happy to recommend!

Sainsbury's Basics Cornflakes (about 30p) are fine, not quite Kellogg's but a lot better than the price might suggest!

Sainsbury's Basics gravy granules (I think about 25p) are also fine for a quick gravy. Tesco Value ones are NOT!

Tesco Value washing powder actually smells quite nice & cleans perfectly well.

Co-op do either 10 or 12 eggs (can't remember which) for about £2 in their basics range. These are free-range, just all different sizes.

Can't think of any more for now, but will add when I do! Great idea for a thread!

Just thought of another one - Tesco Value frozen white fish fillets. Prefer buying these to cod fillets, as they are pollack so more sustainable & tastier IMO. Great to eat on their own or in a fish pie.

Great thread. There was another one I think very similar to this a while back

Sainsburys basics fizzy water 12p. Obv it's just water but great when we needed some at a party to mix with elderflower. Just hid the bottle.

S basics tortilla crisps ok a bit cardboardy.

Have bought and yet to try the lasagne sheets

Bananas are great!

Asda value dishwasher tablets - white box with green writing. Can't remember exact price, but a lot cheaper that branded dishwasher tablets. Really didn't notice any difference between them and the Finish tablets.

Anything from Lidl. Everything is half the price of other super markets and tastes even better. Have seen my millionaire next door neighbour in there 3 times now too.Wink

Tesco value aloe vera conditioner - imagine my annoyance after years of spending a couple of quid a bottle on whatever fancy hair conditioner caught my eye to discover that my hair actually looks fantastic with this stuff! It's about 70p for a huge bottle - 8p for 100ml's. As a quick comparison - Elvive is 1.08p for 100ml's.

Either Daisy brand or Sainsburys dishwasher powder (I think they are the same - in exactly same packaging anyway) - we use our dishwasher either daily or every two days and I opened the latest tub at the beginning of June. Looks like I have at least another month to go and it costs about six quid. Not quite sure how I have done it but there you go.

Another vote for tesco daisy dishwasher loose powder here. Lets way longer than the tablets as you really don't need as much as you think. They stopped doing it in the handy large pouring bottle last time I went in and it was in a box instead which doesn't pour but luckily I had kept my bottle from last time so decanted it into that.

Great tip about the basic shampoo and conditioner, will definitely be giving that a go. Going on maternity leave after Christ and so things are going to be pretty tight!

Lidl beans and other tinned products are great, as well as their fruit juice, also tesco value and asda smart rice juice are fine, as is pasta and kitchen roll really good especially tesco value. Lido dry cat food is really good quality and my cat prefers it to both whiskas and iams.

Home and bargain baby wipes own brand 69p and fine. Tesco nappies are great, I plan to try lidl ones this time as well, we didn't have a lidl in our town last time I was pregnant! Lidl do great fabric conditioner, which has a watery texture, but the clothes smell gorgeous. Tesco and asda own brand washing powder are fine, but I love bold orange blossom and always stock up when it's on offer, usually a few times a year for the big 52 wash packs. It's the smell of heaven! Might go back to the non bio when baby arrives though.

Tesco daisy bathroom cleaner and washing up liquid are really good, but watch out for home and bargain, sometimes brands like harpic and Ajax are just as cheap in there. Same for oxo and bisto, nearly always cheap in h&b. They also do olive and vegetable oils at a very reasonable price.

Lidl 70% plain chocolate, 90p-ish, 100g - perfect for baking, not so good 'raw' but that stops me snacking on it Hmm
Aldi skin cream £1.90 - yes really - v similar to Nivea, is even called Q10
Toro Loco red wine (Aldi, £3.49) was recommended in the Guardian (I know!!)
Both have great German Xmas treats like Stollen and Lebkuchen, also Pannettone.
Agree with Tulip Basically, if it's European, get it from a European supermarket not an English one!

All the cleaning stuff, multisurface cleaners, cream cleaner, toilet cleaner, thin bleach for spraying on laundry, dishwasher tablets, bio washing powder.

Daisy dishwasher powder is fab.

Unless you're a baked beans connoisseur, both Sainsbury's Basics and Tesco's Value baked beans are okay.

I really need to get a grip

I bloody hate value brands, always buy branded goods, no wonder I'm skint

is it worth a trip to aldi then?

betabaker · 01/12/2011 21:47

Yes it is, but first time just browse, or maybe get a handful of things.
(I save so much time going there - as well as money - because there's no distractions like clothes or magazines, and only one type of binliner/baked beans.)
Lidl is slightly better though - does some brands as well. Don't change over in one go, just check the prices...(Bread and meat, Sainbury's every time.)
