How do I encourage her to carry on? I was like her as a child. Always writing stories and they were quite good. But as I got older I lost the urge and motivation. How can I help her not to?

I was just thinking that! I have a collection of stories I wrote at that age (all about various animals too, nearly all ending in tragedy) - maybe it is like everything else, if they see us doing it on a regular basis it will seem a natural thing to continue.

You might enjoy writing again, start with 'morning pages' or something if possible?

Orm, she might enjoy this when it starts up again next month.
it's a monthly short story competition run by Bloomsbury.

By short, they mean SHORT. Stories have to be no more than 247 words.

It's quite a skill and teaches them to be very sharp with their writing.

Does she know anyone else who writes at school? ds2 (also 10) has been paired up with another child and each week they meet up with the teacher at lunchtime to read what each other has written and critique it.

It would work better if said child were not ds2's "arch enemy" , but I'm hoping when he goes to secondary he might be able to meet someone more on his wavelength.

"Reading clubs" are often hotbeds of would-be writers too. That's where ds1 heard about the 247 tales competition.

I like it you are right to be proud- she's got a flair for it thats for sure. maybe you could encourage her to draw scenes with her characters in, as well as write about them?
