Ok, slightly random query here. I've returned to a novel I was working on about a decade ago and on re-reading it have decided this should be a book for a teen audience. However, my protagonist is mid/late twenties. My question is - does the main protagonist for a children's or teen book need to be the age of the readership (or close to it)? I have a feeling that she should ...

For YA you should really cap at about 17 or 18. And it's aspirational so for that your reader would be a bit younger. At least I believe so.

Thanks Skyler. That's what I was thinking. I guess she can't be a college lecturer then ... need to do some thinking around this one!! Thank you.

There's always NA (new adult)! Similar but protagonists usually 18-25...
