Problems with current stories and losing their freshness as it takes time to write

How to deal with this?

An ongoing theme in my book is political decisions that seem ludicrous but are reality. If it takes me a year (say) to write this book, many of the roots of the individual stories will no longer be current.

I suppose I just need to write it quickly and try to make the stories less specific, but does anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks

It's very difficult to write about political decisions as they do change so quickly. With any book, writers are guessing the future market as it takes so long to get published. Have you thought of writing about a decision that has already taken place, and what would happen if it wasn't made in the first place?

It's sort of along those lines actually - the implications if the more extreme lines were taken. I guess this doesn't need to be really current, but I need to capture the feeling of the times, if that makes sense?

That makes sense. It's a problem for people who write Law books as well, as they are often out of date by the time they get to print. Is there a generic plot that would last IYKWIM?

Yes, it (I hope) will still make a good story, but is quite topical.

It'll be OK. Need to write it before I worry about it getting out of date, anyway!

This is what's happened with The Thick Of It on tv! The writers wrote in some really daft decisions made by politicians only to find that very shortly after filming it the ConDems had made very similar decisions!

Could you put dates at the top of each chapter?
