There is a definitive list on a website called Duotrope. You can put in your search criteria, including whether you want professional fees or print/Internet magazines. A lot do not pay and think that the kudos of being published with them is your reward. But it is a good way to get a reputation.

Granta is probably the best but the hardest to crack. They take AGES to respond but if you are published here, well you are well on your way.

PANK is an online venue - edgy and visceral.

INK, SWEAT AND TEARS is a good site - friendly and quick to respond.

Of course there are so many others, including THE NEW WELSH REVIEW, VESTAL REVIEW and MSLEXIA. I have been published in MSLEXIA and it felt quite an achievement.

The very crowning publication and LOTS OF MONEY would be The New Yorker. If they even given you a personal rejection, you are doing well....

But check out Duotrope - it is fab resource....
