I need some advice... Just had a day 12 clomid scan. This is my 5th cycle of clomid at 150mg. We got a consultant who kept saying to us we were there to find out if there was 3 or more eggs. He looked and said there were some eggs there but not one stood out from the others and he thought it was unlikely there would be 3 or more he then said I didnt need to come back for another scan this month and to wait for my period and write to him if it is longer than 33 days where I will be added to a 'long' waiting list for injections. When we asked if that meant there were some there he said all im saying is that there wont be more than 3 and the ones there are small and may/ maynot develop! We asked about how 'long' exactly teh waiting list is and he said he could not tell us-am so confused-- we initally took that to be bad news but the more we think about the more confused we are-has anyone had any experience of this? wondering if we should go private but does that mean we will be taken of the nhs waiting lists because if we need ivf we really could not afford it! thanks for any advice!

Hi Lorelei,

My guess is that unfortunately for yourself, clomid has not been successful in doing the job its supposed to (i.e making the ovaries work harder).

Have you been diagnosed with a condition called polycystic ovaries or have you even got a diagnosis?. I ask this as clomid is often given to women with ovulatory problems and also the fact that injectibles are now being mentioned. I note there are also multiple cystic follicles on your ovaries which seems characteristic too with PCO.

I also faced a longish wait of several months to receive the injectible drugs due to funding issues; my cons actually suggested a surgical option at that point which for me was successful.

I would be wary of going private simply because some private clinics can offer substandard treatment at high cost. If you were to go private I would do your researches thoroughly before handing over your hard earnt cash. Does the cons you see work in the private sector as well?. I also saw my NHS cons as a private patient at his clinic.

It may be that you won't need IVF; if PCO is an issue IVF is very much a last resort and should only be used if all other treatment options have failed.

Lorelei

Am very sorry to read what happened to you.

Laparoscopic ovarian diathermy can have a degree of success with some PCOS patients although it is not a cure (as the cystic follicles associated with PCOS always return). It can kickstart ovulation; in this procedure the surgeon punctures the cystic follicles on the ovaries with an electrical needle or laser.

BTW you may also find Verity's website helpful:-
