Can you have a false negative?

I had my first period since dd was born 12 months ago on the 21st December and haven't had one sice then. I did a test nearly 2 weeks ago and it was negative but still no period! I'm still bf so I suppose that could be why but it seems a bit strange that I had one then no more. Has anyone had a fale negative or experience of bf/irregular periods?
TIA

Irregular periods with breastfeeding is very common I believe - I certainly had it, and my GP wouldn't investigate possible problems until I had stopped b/fing because the b/fing could have been responsible. Now not b/fing, and things are more or less back to normal so lloks like it was the b/f.

I had a false negative test before each of my two pregnancies. Probably worth getting yourself checked out even though you're bf.

Yes you can have false negatives, I had two positives from home tests and then a negative from the doctors and a negative from the hospital.

Opps, not what I wanted to hear really. I don't seem to have any of the symptoms I had in early pg with dd but even then I didn't find out until 7 weeks. It wouyldn't be a disaster if I was pg but the timing isn't great as I've only just gone back to work and reallye njoying it- couldn't afford childcare for 2 so would have to give it up. Also, dd has only just started sleepiing well and the thought of having to go througha nother year of that is awful. That sounds bad, dd means the world to me and is the best thing I have ever done.
So the advice is definitely to test again then?

Could you try asking for a test done by the chemist or the doctor? Are these more accurate than the home kits?

Report
Hayls · 11/02/2005 14:06

Did another test and was negative- tried the Clearblue one and they're meant to be pretty accurate,a ren't they? So I'm just waiting patiently for af to arrive!

It could take some time - I know I was very irregular when I was b/f. Hope you are glad with the negative result.

I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice / their opinion: DH and I have been ttc for about 6 months now (came off pill 6 months ago). No luck for far, and have had the monthly round of hope, followed by disappointment and frustration. Anyway, this time round, am actually 3 days late, but did 2 pregnancy tests this morning and day before yesterday (with First Morning Urine) and both came back negative. However, I am REGULAR AS CLOCKWORK, and feel really peculiar at the moment- sore boobs, exhausted, a bit feverish, starving hungry and VERY moody! I know these can all be PMT symptoms, but I just feel this time round that I could well be PG. AF was due on Weds, and I had a couple of light spots of bleeding on Monday and Tuesday morning (literally one spot when I wiped and nothing more). Could that have been implantation bleeding, and could I have got a false negative pregancy test? I dont know whether to make a doc's appt. cos last time I went to docs they told me that they dont do blood tests any more, as they think the Home Preg Tests are so reliable. Just dont know what to think! Need some hope though: how possible is it that I am pregnant, but dont have enough HPC to show up on a test?

Any answers gratefully received!!

yes, you can get a false negative...but even though it is possible, it doesn;t mean that the negative you have got is not correct, IYSWIM

of course it is possible to be pregnant , fingers crossed

I did have four negatives before getting a positive with DS (who is now 15 months). I think I ovulated late so therefore period was due late (I was irregular anyway though). I only got a BFP on day 41 of cycle.

If still no period on Monday maybe try another test? And good luck!

Thanks Egg!
BTW can I just ask about some abbreviations:

what is DS1 and DS2?
and I'm guessing BFP is Big Fat Positive?

Evergrounded, if it was implantation bleed most implant about 7-10days after conception, which could make you as little as 11dpo making it very possible to have a false neg. Some people dont get positives until they are 18dpo

I read something in the news this week about a batch of pg tests that were faulty and giving false negatives. Hang on, I'll look for a link ...

Sorry, I can't find it now. Did I dream it?

Report
evergrounded · 09/06/2007 14:31

I'm pretty sure I ovulated around 23 / 24 May, as I did an ovulation strip test, and it indicated that this was when I ovulated. Which would mean that today I am 16dpo. Still a chance, you think?

Ah - here it is . I didn't dream it after all.

DS1 is "Dear Son 1", ie your first son, and DS2 would be Dear Son 2, etc, DD being Dear Daughter, DH being Dear Husband, DP being Dear Partner etc etc. At the top of the page is an acronym list which tells you them all. There are lots. Some are not obvious. BFP is indeed a Big Fat Positive!

Really hope you get the BFP you are waiting for, then you can come and join us on the "Due in February" thread (I am six weeks pregnant today!!).

Actually now you mention it Tess01 I am having little cramps that feel a bit like AF cramps but not as strong...that's why I keep thinking AF is about to arrive, or that if its not AF, it might be the sign of pregnancy. I know that some people have posted that they have just entirely missed a period, and that it didnt mean that they were PG, but surely if that was happening to me, I wouldnt be getting little cramps and sore boobs?
Thanks for the encouragement Egg- that would be so exciting if I could join your thread...dont want to get my hopes up though, as I have been proved wrong before!

congrats on your 6 weeks!!

Hi Tess and Evergrounded. Tess I am six weeks today which makes me due 2 Feb (so I am told...), the other ladies on our thread seem to tie in with this, ie, a few were six weeks yesterday and due 1 Feb. Tis all a bit confusing ! Congrats though!

Evergrounded, my AF was due on Saturday two weeks ago. From Friday I was getting AF type cramps, and they lasted about a week. I kept thinking I was about to get my period. I did the test on the Tuesday and got a BFP (woohoo). I still get the odd AF-type pain and don't like them, but my GP told me they are completely normal in the first few weeks of pregnancy. I remember last time I was getting later and later, still getting BFNs, still getting AF pains, kept thinking right, this is it, I am about to get AF and it never arrived.

Sorry, hope that makes sense .
