V.V.faint line - BFP, evaporation line, or am I just losing the plot?

Hi,

I am on CD 44, and my cycles recently have been 43/44 days. On CD28 I had a very small amount of spotting which I hoped was implantation, but 4 BFNs later I had to conclude it wasn't.

No sign of AF, so I did a Boots HPT first thing this morning. It took a minute or so fo anything to happen (whereas IME the dye starts appearing almost straight away), then the neg line appeared, then the control line. I thought 'ok, def not pregnant'. I looked again a few minutes later (so around 6 mins after I had first taken the test) and there is a very very faint second line. You can see it without squinting or holding up to the light, but it really is very faint, and doesn't have much colour to it.

Does this sound like an evaporation line, or is there still a possibility I might be pregnant? I feel like I've been clutching at straws all through this cycle, so can't actually trust my judgement any more, although I do 'feel' pregnant (vague nausea, stomach cramps). Am I just going quietly mad here?

Can you do another?

That was my last 'proper' test, though I do have some eBay cheapo tests, not sure how reliable they are. I guess I could wait a few hours and then try with one of those, although if I only got a very faint line with FMU wouldn't I be unlikely to get any line testing later in the day? I know, I just need to get some perspective here and be patient!

It sounds quite plausibile but I understand how difficult it is to wait. From what I understand the ebay cheapies are sometimes more sensitive to HCG are they not?

I would be tempted to do them all!

my cheapies off ebay showed a bfp 8 mins after i should have read. then bought proper one and got bfp within the min.

try the cheapies, after all isn't that what we buy them for? good luck!

pinkpip

This may have been an evaporation line that you saw. Those lines are almost colourless and faint.

If your cycles are consistently over 40 days in nature then it could be that you are not ovulating regularly. Infact this would be seen as an irregular cycle.

How long have you been ttc for?. If its between 6 months to a year I think a visit to the GPs is in order.

If PCOS as well is the underlying cause of the irregular cycles (as it often is) I would certainly visit the GP sooner rather than later.

Thanks guys! I'll try the cheapies later then. Fingers firmly crossed!

Sorry Attila, it looks like I totally ignored you - our internet crashed and has been down all morning .

I do have PCOS, but had been holding out hope as I conceived both DSs with long cycles (36 days with DS1, 42/43 with DS2). We have only been TTC properly for 3 months, so early days I guess...

Thanks again for your sound advice.

Oh, and I've just had another very faint line, this time on an ebay cheapie. So confusing...

Well, two faint lines on two different brands sounds very promising!!

I guess you'll be testing again over the next day or two?? Keeping my fingers crossed for you

I would keep trying pinkpip! Like monkeynuts said it does sound promising!

My 15 BFP's recently started off as a very faint line on a cheapie and then got stronger and stronger!

Thanks MarkStretch & monkeynuts. Will def be testing again tomorrow. And wow, 15 BFPs - I guess its good to be sure about these things!

Ok, so 4 ebay cheapie tests later.... still none the wiser really. All have faint lines, this morning's is (possibly) a teensy bit darker but still very faint. No sign of AF, slight nausea and plenty of stomach twinges. Could I be....?? And if so, does the fact that I'm only getting very faint lines indicate there might be a problem?

Faint lines wouldn't necessarily indicate a problem - it would either be the concentration of the urine causing the faintness, or the fact that it's early in the pregnancy and hcg levels are still relatively low.

To be honest, I wouldn't have expected you to see a big difference in the strength of the lines in one day - it's best to wait at least a couple of days if possible since that's roughly how long it takes for hcg levels to double.

Try to hold off another couple of days (or even three days if you can manage it!), then you should see a difference!

Good luck & keep us posted!

Yes keep us posted! It does sound good, I would say if you keep getting lines it is sounding positive. Are they still taking a while to come up or getting quicker?

Hi MarkStretch, yes they seem to be getting quicker. This afternoon I caved and did an ASDA test, and got a line well within 3 minutes - its thinner and lighter than the control line, but a definite line nonetheless! Its still early days, so I'm not shouting from the rooftops.... but, in a very quiet voice.... I guess I'm pregnant .

I had a very faint BFP a couple of years ago (on my 30th birthday actually), got all excited, and 7 weeks later had my period/ miscarried - I had a scan, and the rather rude radiographer sadi "well, there's no sign there was EVER a pregnancy here"- I looked things up, and discovered it may have been a chemical pg - which never really gets started, but just enough to kick your hormones in to trigger a bfp.

I don't mean to be negative, and wish you lots of luck, and hope its a proper BfP, just don't get your hopes up toomuch yet. good luck
