helllp! advice re: day1-3/ day21 blood tests needed urgently

Can anyone help me? I cant ring my doctor/nurse as there is no one there this morning and I am having my blood tests at the phlebotomy clinic and they are unlikely to know directly about fertility blood tests so wondered if any lovely MN'er might know the answer to this.

After an epic 51 day cycle I started spotting this morning, temp dropped etc so apart from being pretty down that I am not pregnant, I am supposed to be doing a day1-3 blood test so my questions are:

  1. does the 1-3 blood test need to be a fasting test or can I get it done this afternoon?

2)I know its meant to be done on day 1-3 of proper bleeding but since its bank holiday weekend and I am spotting today that means I will bleed properly tomorrow and by Tuesday it will be day 4 - so is it better to do the blood test today or on day 4???

Thanks in advance to any one who can help

Hi Pinkmook

I don't think you need to worry about fasting - no one mentioned anything to me about that when I had mine done and I've not read anything about it on here.

Not sure about whether it's better to do it today or Tuesday although I was told to do mine on days 2-4 rather than 1-3. Others may know better but I suspect as long as they know which day it was done on, they should be able to interpret the results accordingly.

Good luck.

Have just read your message. I would answer your questions as follows:-

  1. No
  2. If you can have the blood test done today then do so, if not Tuesday will be okay.

What hormone levels are they looking at?. Ideally this early in the cycle they should be looking at LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulation hormone). These levels should be compared against each other as well - these should be ideally the same.

A 51 day cycle is highly likely not to be one in which ovulation occured. If your cycles are consistently of that length or thereabouts I would not do temp charting (its not worth doing if periods are irregular).

I would seek a referral to a gynae asap as you are spotting as well. Spotting between periods should always be checked out further to establish the underlying cause.

Also you can get temp drops in the later half of a cycle when an egg has not been shed so charting is not inffalible.

My guess is if that your LH and FSH are awry then your progesterone level (taken on or around day 21) will not indicate that ovulation has occured in that particular month.

Thanks Attila - my temp chart did show a definite shift on day 39 but from what you say that doesn't mean anything?

Am so fed up with all this I just feel like sobbing (i know I am self indulgent idiot and my life could be far worse but its breaking my heart)

The temp shift on day 39 would not in itself indicate ovulation if your cycle was 51 days.

When do you get the blood test results?. If the results come back to the GP I would ensure that he compares the level of LH against that of FSH. Hormonal imbalances causing ovulation problems cannot be ruled out here but these can be treated.

(((((((((((((pinkmook)))))))))))))

Think you need a hug as well. If there are underlying hormonal problems these can be treated. Such things are not an absolute barrier to conception.

Thanks Attila [sad smile emoticon} I could kil DH for getting a vasectomy in the first place - if he'd not done that nthere would only be my issues contributing to this crap! I know thinking like that wont get me anywhere but I could scream sometimes

My GP is crap. He told me I could have the blood tests any day but I knew he was wrong so I went to the family planning clinic and saw a gyne nurse who said he was wrong and explained what day I needed to get them done on. When I went to see him about a neck problem last week he asked if I'd got the test done I said no as I thought it had to be done on day1-3 he said no but I just feined (sp?)agreement and got them done when I knew it was right so I doubt he'll even know what to look for on the results as he doesn't even know they have to be done on specific days
