Conception

Is it possible to ovulate later than day 35?

Had to have gonadatrophin treatment to conceive my dd as I never ovulated. I have had periods since having her (now 18 months) but they are all over the place - cycles can vary from 30 days to 55! Blood tests on this cycle (on day 21) indicated that I am not ovulating. But is it possible to ovulate later and the blood test did not pick it up because it was too early? We have been bding every other night since day 10/ Am now on day 35. Could I still ovulate or am I just wishful thinking.

Have got clomid to try once I get a period (although have been told it is unlikely to work. I just want to get a period or ovulate or do something!!!!!!xx

I have 49 day cyles and from my two DC must have ovulated and conceived roughly day 35-40. In both cases they miscalculated my due dates by about a month!

From what I learnt whilst being on the TTC threads was you can ovulate at any time in your cycle, so even as late as CD35. The days before ovulation can vary but the days post ovulation (lutael phase) remain nearly the same each cycle. So with a 55 day cycle and say average lutael phase of 14 days you probably didn't ovulate until CD41. So there probably is still time this month

HTH.

Hi Tara,

I don't think the blood test result would have changed had it been taken later tbh with you. With cycles ranging from 30 - 55 days it is likely that these cycles are anovulatory anyway. It is possible to have periods without ovulating.

BTW have you been given a diagnosis of the underlying problem?. Hormonal imbalances are often the root cause of such difficulties (PCOS or thyroid problems are often to blame in this regard).

Presumably as well you have a diagnosis as you needed gonadatrophin treatment last time around. It may be that this is needed again.

Are you also under the care of a gynae currently?. Does he want to try this before gonadatrophin treatment?.

HTH

hi, agree with Attila. A period can occur without ovulation at 40+ days because the lining gets too heavy and sloughs off.

However, you CAN ovulate at any day of the month. Women with PCOS can do this suddenly.

Do you ever notice signs of ovulation- slight cramp, mucus change etc? Also if you have ovulated you can get pms signs.

oh btw if you had ovulated, the test would show it at any point after that and before the drop in progesterone that triggers the period. But, the length of time after ovulation until the period is almost never more than 16 days.

hi there, I've got PCOS and managed to conceive my DS with no help. I have always had epic cycles. usually around 3 months long so it must be possible to ov very late. I have no idea how long my cycle was when I conceived DS but it would have been a very long one as I dont think I've ever had a "normal length" cycle.
HTH's dont give up hope.

Oooooh - all you wonderful people! Have just come back to read this and am overwhelmed by the response - thank you! Attila - I have never been given a diagnosis. Trying to conceive last time round they blamed my weight - I was very slim/skinny - they said that could be the reason for not ovulating. But I have not lost all the weight I put on when pregnant and so they cannot blame that this time round - my BMI is fine.
The gynae' said that my blood test result showed that my oestrogen levels were so low that she does not think clomid will work (it didn't last time) so she thinks that it will have to be gonadatrophin treatment again. But does the blood test result simply show if you have already ovulated? i.e. if, say, I ovulated on day 30 but the bloodtest was on day 21, would oestrogen levels still be low on day 21?

Hi Tara can't help you with the technical question but my cycles are longer - not as long as 55 but easily 38-40 (and probably a good few 50 days when I wasn't paying attention!). I have become pregnant twice so not impossible at all. In fact a quick survey of friends when I was last ttc showed loads had cycles around 33-35. Now ttc again after m/c so waiting to see what my cycle decides to do next...

Oh sorry just realised I was talking about cycle length not ovulation...am such an idiot. But if you have cycles 30-55 days then I suppose my message still stands in some way!

Mmmmm - just read back through my post and I don't think I wrote it properly! What I basically want to know is this: if my 21 day bloods showed that my oestrogen level was v low, does that mean that I have bug**r all chance of ovulating? Or could it suddenly rise much later if I have a long cycle? Am just wanting to know whether I should give up hope this cycle or whether we still need to be bding like rabbits! x

Tara,

I would seek a diagnosis - you should have a diagnosis of the underlying problem.

The day 21 blood test measures the level of progesterone. A level of 30 or over usually indicates ovulation. Its a standard blood test.

Do you also know what your LH and FSH levels are like?. Has progesterone been measured?. Have you had internal ultrasounds scans to check your uterine cavity and ovaries?.

Estrogen (this controls the formation of uterine lining amongst other functions) is only part of the overall picture.

Sorry for all the questions!.

21 day test measured progesterone and oestrogen. Letter from gynae' only talks about my oestrogen levels - does not measure progesterone but I guess she will feedback to me when I next see her. I have clomid to take when I next get a period and then have to have bloods taken again on day 21 after clomid. The go back and see gynae' a week after that. I had the unltrasounds before conceiving my dd - all was fine there. Just desperate for a period really so that I can start the clomid although she thinks it is unlikley to work - it didn't last time. If oestrogen and progesterone were v low for 21 day test, do you think that I am unlikely to ovulate? Thanks for your help in answering my questions Attila! x
