I posted about this a couple of weeks ago but I'm so upset and depressed that any advice I got then has gone out of the window.........

DH has had a sperm test done and it has come back with really confusing results.
volume- 2.6ml (normal)
count- 117million per ml (average is 50million per ml, 20million is low)
Motility- 6% fast motility, 37% progressive (makes 43% going in a straight line, should be 50%)
Morphology- 6% (ideally should be 15% but the have said that there would be no effect on fertility unless its below 5%)

In my head i am going round in circles and keep going over the results. bits of them seem so bad then i talk myself round to actually they are not so bad. I'm going mad!! I wish we had never had them done to be honest, and cant talk to DH about them cos it would hurt him. Clinic and GP have said they are 'fine- morphology is low but no cause for concern'.

What i want to know is......

could the results be the reason that after a year ttc I am not pregnant?

Also if anybody can give me a story of hope I would greatly appreciate it cos I am starting to think that I am not going to be a mum

Results seem fine, dh had much much worse than this and ds is lying next to me right now

It would be fairly normal for it to take a bit longer to conceive, but from having talked to many experts on the matter, until you've been ttc for at least a year there is no reason to think there is anything wrong.

Fwiw, dh was taking omega oil and zinc supplements (for unrelated reasons) when I got pg and we were told that these can help sperm motility/morphology to improve.

Sometimes it just takes a bit longer, is all.

He had less than 1% viable last time we checked!

did you concieve naturally?

When we compare the results to the norms they just dont look good. How long were you ttc for?

Yes, conceived naturally. Weren't ttc at all as we were told we didn't have a hope! Was probably about 4 years after we last used any form of contraception, though.

Hi

Semen analysis has to be done as subfertility is not solely the preserve of the woman.
Sperm test results should always be given to the couple jointly and I would take issue with them giving you such results solely and likely without proper explanation as to what they mean. I would therefore ask for an appointment as a couple to discuss these results properly.

Is this the initial semen analysis - I would not worry myself unduly if this is just the first or second test result as these tests should be repeated. Many men see "poor" sperm test results as a slight on their virility and potency but there really is no connection.

What tests have you both had done to date?. I ask this as sometimes various tests can be missed out. Are you under the NHS or being seen privately?.

It also sounds like you are still not fully aware why conception is not readily happening, do you have any diagnosis?.

This has been our only test so far. We self referred. We are not being seen by a subfertility unit. We thought we would check this as a simple test that we can self refer for. I am going to speak to my GP to get some initial tests done.

Attila- do you have experience with interpreting sperm tests?

Who did the test results?. Was this one of those Boots type testing kits that checks for such things? (I hope it was not one of these as these can certainly cause anxiety). One semen analysis is certainly not conclusive of there being any male factor problems.

Certainly speak to your GP but instead of getting him to do tests, ask for a referral to a subfertility unit at a NHS unit. Initially you are far safer going under the NHS.

You are far better off going through your GP instead to have tests done (and more importantly explained properly) at a NHS aubfertility unit. You should both be evaluated further by a gynae.

You need a diagnosis first and foremost - aim for that.

We self referred to the subfertility unit. We found out that we could do that- everyone including GP seemed pretty shocked but the unit properly explained results and werent concerned at all.
