3 weeks from the last episode of unprotected sex is the most reliable test, although some will show up as soon as 2 weeks (maybe sooner?). However if the earlier test showed up negative, i wouldn't believe it to be 100% reliable until 3 weeks after the last sex.

The early ones (like first response) that say they can test 4 days before period due are based on you testing 10 days past ovulation. (they assume a 28 day cycle with 14 days between ovulation and period) but tests may not show positive that early even though your friend may be pg.
