Hi all- I know there are some threads about this, but I thought I would try to get some up to date info. I just had an appointment with consultant who suggests that this is the next step. So...

  1. I wondered if anyone has had any successes
  2. how soon were you recovered and back to work
  3. how soon were you able to start TTC after op?
    Thanks!

Brief answers to your questions posed:-

1, I became pg two months post op
2, I was in full time work at the time and was advised to take two days off work post op
3, as soon as I felt able to.

Why has the cons suggested a laparoscopy to give it its proper name?.

Do you have a diagnosis of the underlying problem?.

I would also advise you to ensure you have a follow up appointment a week or so post op to discuss what was found. I can give you a list of questions to ask if you so wish.

Thanks, Atilla- a wealth of knowledge, as always!

The consultant suggested the laproscopy and ovarian diathermy because of ongoing problems I have experienced. I went off the pill, had no AF for 3 months and then got pg the next month. Sadly, this ended in a MMC at 13 weeks. I had an ERPC. After that I didn't have an AF for 6 months. One doc diagnosed Asherman's syndrome and my new consultant diagnosed PCO. I was then put on clomid- I have had AF regularly, but it is very, very light. The consultant suggests that the next step is the laproscopy.

I had ovarian diathermy due to PCOS. Was not put on clomid due to unsuitability to take it. It had a successful outcome in my case but I do know of instances where it has not been successful. Equally I do know of other women who have become pg following this surgery.

The worst thing about the lap was the post op pain due to the carbon dioxide gas that is used by the surgeon to get a better view of the organs. This travels upwards into the shoulder a day or two post op; painkillers took the edge off it but it was very painful initially.

Do ensure you are given a follow up appointment a week or two post op; you need to discuss the findings of the operation.

Best of luck re the lap; any others questions please ask.

Thanks, Atilla. It gives me some hope. It has been such a long journey to get here and all the harder having lost a baby and having such an easy time conceiving that one. I just desperately want to move forward. I know it is not a solution (I made that mistake thinking Clomid was the answer to all my problems!). I can't have the op for a few months for a variety of reasons, but I hope to make the appointment soon.

I will definitely make a follow-up appointment at the same time. My new consultant is very good, I think, and very approachable.

Did they find out anything when they had a look around or did everything look fine and they just did the diathermy? I'm terrified they will find something more serious!

A lap is often used as a diagnostic procedure - I would establish that its not just being used for diagnostics otherwise you may need further surgery.

I had an operation called laparoscopic ovarian diathermy.

In my case endometrial deposits from endometriosis was found and diathermised out. I had suffered from painful periods for years - endometriosis was the underlying case. The cystic follicles on my ovaries were also diathermised.

Any other questions just ask.

I had it just diagnostically, although people kept telling me that it might help as a side effect by flushing your tubes with the dye so clearing any minor blockages. Didn't help for me (another 2 yrs before I got pregnant and that was shedloads of Clomid and IUI).

I needed a full fortnight off work afterwards I'm afraid, although I think that may be because I react badly to general anaesthetics. Or it may have been psychological because I really didn't want to need the investigation, if you see what I mean.

I think we started TTC as soon as I felt up to it (the next month)

Just found out our insurance will not cover it and my DH doesn't switch to his new provider (which we were counting on) until next June. I'm gutted. So either wait 6 months or more on NHS or pay (which we cannot afford). Did you both have it done on the NHS?

Hi
I'm going in for a lap and dye this afternoon so just thought I'd post on this thread. I had a diffucult C section with my daughter so the consultant thinks my tues may be blocked with scar tissue. If they are badly blocked I will need further surgery. 9 month waiting list on NHS so we are lucky enough to be able to afford to go privately, only had to wait 2 weeks after seeing consultant.

Will let you know how it goes, I'm feeling nervous at the moment, don't like the idea of the op but hey, if it's one step closer to a baby I'll give it a shot....

Hi Hoping - had lap and dye yesterday, it is fine and doesn't take long at all...bit like having a smear - not pleasant but ok!

Thankfully mine was all fine - doctor called it checking that tubes were patent which they were

Good luck today and fingers crossed the dye flows and your tubes are patent too...

Thanks Minxi, made me feel a little less stressed out. They have to give me a general anaesthetic? Did you have to have one? I asked if I could just have a local anaesthetic but they said no! Just wondering why....

My laparoscopy was no trouble at all. Had it on the Friday afternoon and went out to a dinner party on Saturday evening! Some shoulder pain (as someone else explained) but nothing that paracetemol couldn't sort out. No success story, I'm afraid, but we were 'unexplained' and finally conceived DS1 on our second IUI (intra-uterine insemination).
