Conception

Starting IUI Next Month. Any Experiences/Advice to Relate?

I'm 39, TTC for a first baby and after about a year of nothing happening I finally saw a fertility expert. All my tests have come back just fine and my DH had sperm analysis which also came back fine. So currently there is no apparent reason for me not to get pregnant...except that I haven't yet. I'll be doing IUI on my next cycle for the first time. I'll be taking Femera (Letrozole) for 5 days before ovulation to increase my chances. I don't know anyone who has done IUI (oddly I know more people who have done IVF) so I'm hoping for some shared experiences or advice?

Reiltin - I'm crossing my fingers for you and your wife!!

I know that this is process that gains better results over repeated cycles. My doctor is going to do 4 cycles of IUI with me, he believes there should be a result within that time frame, if not then time to asses the next option I guess. I hope I'm not being negative too mention that, I actually think that all of us being candidates for IUI is a positive thing, a sign that we all appear to have good potential to get pregnant, with a little help ;)

I hope people will feel welcome and comfortable to update their experiences on this thread. I'm scheduled for IUI around mid September... keep you all posted :)

bessie84 - Injections! You know what - you'll be fine with them in no time! If your DP/DH will be doing the honours, they'll get used to it quickly too I promise. My personal experience of injecting is limited to insulin injections for our elderly Grandfather many years ago, I do remember how quickly I got better and just "matter of fact" about doing it. It would be great if you could keep us posted :)

Update: So I will not be doing IUI this cycle due to DH's emergency work travel (Overseas - serious project issues to be dealt with). I'll have to wait until the October when I'm next ovulating. Strangely I feel a little relieved, I don't know why, I guess it's because getting ready to do IUI suddenly made this all seem very real!

Anyway, instead I get to have a lovely HSG test tomorrow which my doctor was planning to run concurrently with my IUI this month but obviously will just do the test for now to make sure everything looks fine.

HSG was good, so no problems there at least. In someways it's frustrating to have every test come back looking good, what on earth is the problem then?

Anyway, the doctor told me that just doing the HSG procedure itself has been known to help with women conceiving. They don't know why exactly except it's likely the dye flushes out your system a bit like flushing out a drain (sounds lovely doesn't it).

Bessie -I'm sure they'll want you to start this cycle, I would think it makes sense to give you the training/counselling right before you begin doing it. Goodluck!!

this is the cycle I do my first round of IUI. Today is the first day to take Letrozole (have to take it for the next 5 days). I'll have a ultrasound done next Friday (18th) and then probably do the IUI on Sunday or Monday after. Hoping for good things but it's the first time so we'll see.
