Hycosy and clomid... still confused

Hi everyone,
DP and I have been ttc for over 2years now. DP's sperm analysis was 'normal' however, we were told his morphology was not tested (found it quite strange how this was omitted).

I have had all the blood tests, made more difficult due to very irregular cycles, ranging from 46 days to 21. So we have finally been referred to a specialist where I had the HYCOSY scan- actually not as bad as I thought it would be.

The Doctor was lovely and talked me through it all, my tubes were fine- great news. However, she said my ovaries were polycystic in appearance and that was all that was said about it. I really don't know why I didn't ask her about this but, because she didn't make a big deal out of it I thought it was ok.... really regret this now and was wondering if anyone could help?!

Also I'm on my first cycle of clomid, very excited got my scan booked for friday. If anyone would like to share their experiences, positive and negative I'd love to hear. I might try and join the clomid crew but find it hard as there are so many comments. I'm a bear of little brain.

Hi, I had the HyCoSy scan, they think my tubes were clear, I have polycystic ovaries too and am about to start clomid whenever I get my next cycle. Keep me posted on how you get on! I'd love to hear about clomid experiences too

Hiya, good to hear your tubes are clear. :) I am currently on cd17. Clomid has gone well so far (touch wood). I took 50mg on days 2-6. I was scanned and it showed I had 3 follicles 2 of the right size (she said I was at risk of multiple pregnancies ;) ). Cm indicated that I had ovulated. Feel slightly crampy today. I never have ovulation pain or any pains unless its menstural so I think it's related to clomid. I have to get blood tests done on Monday to confirm ovulation. Then test the week after. Very hopeful and excited.

As for the ovaries I'm still unsure. My blood tests suggest I don't have the syndrome but as I said in the op the doctor didn't detail the implications.

Good to hear back from someone, keep me posted :)

Ooh sounds good - good luck! I am on day 34 of my cycle and just had acupuncture, hoping AF comes soon so I can start clomid! Have you had side effects? Also did you used to have spotting before you started clomid? I get that mid-cycle, not sure why. I don't think I ovulate naturally - do you know if you ever did before clomid?

Hi Alexandra,

I don't think I have had side effects. I thought I may have had slight blurred vision but I may have just been paranoid/ very tired. I never had spotting before clomid. My period would come really heavy for three days, disappear completely for two, then come back with avengence for two. It was hard work!
As for ovulation, my blood tests suggested I did but they were difficult to get accurate due to my random length of cycles. I also tried temping-very boring- this didn't show significant rises. Have you started your clomid yet? I have the blood test tomorrow.

I always wanted to have acupuncture.. would you recommend it?

Slippy - my consultant said to stop immediately if I got blurred vision x

That's why we should never read the info on the side of the pack!

I'm on day 38 now and really want my next cycle to start so I can start clomid. I had a 90 day cycle last year but since then it's been around 34-42 days so hopefully it won't be a ridiculously long one again! I'm really hormonal and emotional so fingers crossed the old bag is on her way!

As for acupuncture, I've heard good things about it - it hasn't got me pg and, as far as I know, it hasn't made me ovulate (of course not sure on that one) but it def relaxes me and (this is way TMI) when I get home afterwards, I always have LOADS of discharge and my cycles haven't been as crazy as that 90 day cycle, so I like to think it's doing something. There is a logic to it, so it's not too hippy! I think when I start clomid, it will help to know I'm doing as much as I can to relax and get my body ready. I go every two weeks, so for £60 a month, at worst it just relaxes me, at best it's actually helping with hormones etc.

I don't think my hospital are planning on blood tests - I think they're only planning on scanning for signs of ovulation on day 8/10? Maybe I should push for blood tests too.

Was just reading on another thread about someone who conceived on first round of clomid! Hope that's us too Smile Are you doing anything else to help with it all - I'm thinking about being super healthy and trying to get some exercise in case that helps?

Hello ladies, sorry for gatecrashing, but I saw the thread and just wanted to provide my tale.

I too have PCOS and very irregular periods. Had all manner of tests, with blood tests confirming PCOS and the ultrasound indicating that there were cysts but that they were not that large. From what you have described slippysnow it sounds like you may have PCO rather than the syndrome (the difference being that you have cysts on your ovaries but your hormone levels are ok).

I also had to have a hycosy to check that my tubes were clear before they would start me on clomid. Thankfully my tubes were clear :) and, like you slippy i was prescribed clomid and was to take it on days 2-6 of my cycle.

First round of clomid, ultrasound confirmed cysts had cleared, bloodtests showed i ovulated (which I knew already because i was temping, charting cm etc) and at 9dpo I got my BFP!!! I am now 8 months gone and I think the moral of my story is that it can and will happen for you. My cycles were very irregular (longest was 77 days) and my DH and I had been trying for 13 months (with a chem pg during that as well).

Anyway, just wanted to offer a positive spin to the thread to let you know that it can happen and it will!!

Good luck to both of you and I hope to hear news of your BFPs very, very soon :)

Woop! Thanks for that positive post mooley Smile Did you do anything in particular diet/lifestyle/acupuncture wise whilst taking the clomid, or was it more take the clomid and relax (and dtd lots obviously!) I hope we get our BFPs soon too!

Nope did nothing special, just followed the instructions for taking the pills and let nature do its thing. I had been following a healthier diet but considering for 13 months that had not really helped I just went with the flow. I has been tracking my temp, cm and cervix position and it was also the first month I got positives on OPKs (stopped using them before this because I always has high levels of LH). Could not believe it when I got my positive, so early as well ( I did go on to take 26 tests Blush) and in the first month of taking the drugs!!

I'd recommend SWI every other day, more when in your fertile period.

Do you temp/chart or are you trying to remain more relaxed? If I'm honest I didn't find charting all that stressful but I know some women do (and I am glad to not have to do it now), although I do like to be in control!!

Relaxed? erm...I think I'm more down the obsessive end of the scale. Today I've been googling all sorts of PCOS theories and fertility food tips, for the millionth time! Trying to stay relaxed and stop myself though!

What's weird is I heard OPK's don't work with PCOS because you get positives too often - but I never get positives? Did you get positives before you took clomid as I think that's what you meant and I'm wondering if that means I have a different type of PCOS to you? (although hopefully the same response to clomid eek!) Or was it only when you started clomid that you got your first positive OPK? (Sorry if I'm being thick there, just wanted to check!)

Thanks for sharing your success story and giving us hope!

I used to constantly get positives with the OPKs and then discovered it was due to my hormone levels which were always too high. Have you had bloods taken to measure your LH, FSH, Testosterone etc? I have the full on syndrome but you might just have polycystic ovaries.

I got my first negative OPKs when I started Clomid. Never had them before as previously they had always been either very positive or almost positive (I pee'd on a lot of sticks Grin). After my chemical pg I was convinced I was pg the following month because I kept getting strong OPKs (I'd ran out of HPTs and my need to POAS was great) but turned out I was just being delusional!!

Apart from your epically long cycle, your cycles do seem ok (my shortest was 23 days but that was just after my hycosy which can apparently clear things out. All my others have been between 50 - 80 days long!!) so I'm thinking you may have polycystic ovaries (which I think is better than the syndrome). Smile

Maybe - that would make sense actually as I'm not overweight and apart from bad skin after coming off the pill, I don't have all of the typical PCOS symptoms. My hospital, homerton, don't seem that focused on blood tests - they have based everything on the ultrasound and HyCoSy scans really.

I know everyone is different and it might have nothing to do with it - but how much exercise did you get on clomid? I've heard it can help PCOS so wondered if I should try and do some exercise every day on it (but not go over the top, I'm talking a 20min light workout and a bit more walking to places!) I know my biggest obstacle is going to be relaxing though Smile

Me again. On cycle day 29 I did a boots test. It gave me an extremely faint line. I thought I imagined it but it was there. I knew I should've waited a bit longer :( now I'm in limbo. Trying my hardest not to get excited :(

Ooh exciting! A line is a line!! I can imagine how you feel, trying not to get your hopes up - I have my fingers crossed for you, think it sounds like you could be pg!

I started my clomid on Saturday, no side effects noticed, have my scan on Friday. I've bought some OPKs. Trying not to get my hopes up too much about ovulating and getting pg but it's hard not to!

Woop, keep us posted, when will you do another test?
