Bicarb of soda in bath for chickenpox?

My little boy woke up covered in chickenpox spots this morning. So far he hasn't noticed he's got it, but I guess it will get itchier as the spots start scabbing over.

People keep suggesting using bicarbonate of soda in the bath. Does anybody know how much I should put in? A teaspoonful? eggcupful? Whole tub?

Are there any other remedies that will help? We've got some virasoothe gel but the pharmacist didn't seem to know anything about the bicarb in the bath.

I used this for one of my chicken poxy children - can't remember how much! Certainly not the whole tub, probably round about a tablespoon.

I was advised not to use it for my other child who had eczema at the time as it might dry her skin out too much. The practice nurse recommended an oatmeal bath thing - I just googled and I think it was Aveeno. There are also diy recipes for an oatmeal bath if you google.

I put about a tablespoon of bi-carb.

Also put oats into a pair of tights and held it under running water.(not in the same bath as the bi-carb!)

Can also recommend eurax lotion - get it from the chemist - lasts longer than calomine lotion.

Also if spots get really itchy give anti-histimine.

He does get eczema, although it's not too bad at the moment. Might try the oat thing too, thanks.

Can I still use Fucidin H cream too, do you know? If he gets any spots on his eczema areas.

Second the anti histhamine advice. Really helped ds. Logical really - it's an irritant and the body is reaction to it.

What sort of antihistamine can he have? He'll be 2 in a couple of weeks - there doesn't seem to be much medicine available for that age group.

He can have piriton syrup - its suitable from the age of 1.

Hi my dd is 4 and half and has had chicken pox for 2 days solid now I think at peak. They are so many on her face and they are beginning to crust now but still look quite raw and dark red. My
Mum said I shouldn't bath her until they are completely crusted... But I think she really needs a bath to speed it up. Is bicarbonate soda ok? What if it goes in her eyes won't it sting? I'm also worried I might take a spot off and scar her ... They are quite big on her face in particular :(
