Children's health

Not sure this is chicken pox or measles, anyone got more recent experience than i've had?

DD is 2.5 so there's no good asking her if she has a headache and expecting a trustworthy answer (she likes calpol). She has been showing symptoms of a cold for about 5 days (runny nose and tired earlier in evening), but generally still playing and not too poorly.

Today she has developed a cough, and this evening i noticed a blotchy rash on her legs and cheeks, but nowhere else.

The playgroup she has been attending has been reporting cases of chicken pox but IME chicken pox starts on the torso and has clearly defined spots.

Should i be worried?

On the NHS direct symptom checker it came up with measles but i am quite worried and not thinking very clearly.

chicken pox is very obvious. very clear raised red spots that then develop a liquid-filledblister on
they increase in number very rapidly

measles is a much, much finer rash and you would expect her also to have a fever etc

It's neither of those, it's a blotchy pink rash, which doesn't look like chicken pox. I'm pretty sure it's not meningitis though or i'd not be on mumsnet i'd be taking her to the GP service at hospital!

She might have a rash associated with her virus - my DS occasionally gets totally unexplained rashes when he's ill. CP started off with very clear spots (although they didn't turn into fluid filled blisters until about 12 hrs after the first spots had appeared)

get it checked out - I had dd2 at the gp's this morning and the first thing he did was check her for meningitus and searched for a rash, she is 11 - it isn't thankfully but even so get it checked

Will keep a check on her tonight (another night of broken sleep then!) and take her to gp first thing. Glad they open early.
